Descriptive grading terms should apply to K - 3 only. Letter grades should be grades 4 - 12.

They don't like grades or testing because they measure standards. And they don't want to measure standards because it would reveal how far and fast academic performance has plummeted. The NDP has ruined education much like it's ruined everything else.

I have a message for the people who don't actually teach, but confidently assert that they know how to teach, manage behaviour and even prevent crime. The message is: shut up.

I just heard your interview on the radio in Vancouver. Other than you, very little in the regional news. Thanks for speaking out. Looking deeper into the data is very concerning.

Unfortunately bad educational ideas don’t seem to drown despite torrents of data washing against them.

The slow death of 21C skills PISA results for Scotland, Wales, NZ and to a lesser extent, Australia are highly suggestive that building a curriculum around generic skills that don’t exist is a bad plan. 1/2

Student gets her schedule changed due to her teacher being a stickler about cell phones. Gets put in my class because I'm a stickler too. Throws a fit the first day. Throws a fit and walks out the second day. But then gets brought back and I'm asked to let her be on the phone

The mental health issues for high school kids today are bad from phones/social media but made so much worse by weak K-8 where it’s no grades, crayola curriculum, low expectations

Where is the @bctf? #bced #bcpoli
I watched “Schools facing unprecedented challenges post-pandemic” on @ThisWeekABC. It’s unfathomable how you’ve framed the teacher shortages. 300K teachers didn’t just “leave” the field, or the horrendous pay. Many became chronically ill from SARS-CoV-2. Many can no longer manage the classrooms filled with students who have endless cognitive deficits, socioemotional & behavioral problems which are exacerbated and caused by their own sickness, & at-home family health & economic issues (exacerbated and caused by their health issues). I’ve got news for you. The pandemic ain’t over till it’s over. Teacher shortages will only continue to worsen because no one is improving the built environment or taking personal precautions because they’re following public policy. Their hands are tied until the government steps in to stop this madness. Indoor infrastructure to improve air quality via air filtration systems and ventilation must begin NOW. Until then, the data support masking and portable HEPA devices in schools and failure to provide guidance on this is gross negligence. When parents and teachers (and their children) fully awaken to the impaired immune functioning caused by repeated SARS-CoV-2 infections, they’re going to be furious, I assure you. @CDCDirector @CDCgov

Same old story: half-backed idea sows chaos. Everyone blames “poor implementation”, not the hare brained idea itself. Vast amounts of time, energy and money wasted. Good work, Nellie Mae Foundation!

'districts struggled to define what “proficiency” meant' “It is a lesson on the perils of putting a mandate in place and not having organized for the necessary clarity and guidance for the field” I wonder what proportion of #bced feels this...

This isn’t on teachers. This is on parents and society. You can’t create the conditions for chaos and then blame those of us that have to deal with the results. Teachers are damn heroes.
If humanity can impose rules on warfare, let's do something ambitious. Let's try them in high school.

The result is falling scores on international benchmarks - in a country with an unbelievably brilliant historical record of educational achievement at all levels. I know there are a lot of Scottish teachers frustrated with this situation. I really hope things can change.

The article also points out the problem with vague curriculum statements which seem liberating for teachers but actually just create massive confusion and workload because they can be interpreted in wildly different ways. Also totally agree. substack.nomoremarking.com/p…

One of the architects of the curriculum, Keir Bloomer, has said they should have emphasised knowledge more. "Without knowledge there can be no skills." Totally agree. daisychristodoulou.com/2013/…

A remarkable article in Sunday Times on the Scottish curriculum. When Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence was introduced in 2010, I was told repeatedly that its skills-based focus was superior to knowledge-rich approaches I & others supported. 13 years on & what do we see?
