Patients undergoing extracranial surgery early after TBI, or with acute CT brain findings, had worse cognitive & disability outcomes compared with general orthopedic trauma patients or those with TBI with negative head CTs. #ANES25 ja.ma/4niOqxP

Careful driving! Gusting winds at the wrong resonance and frequency can be a hazard!

Happy New Year! Let the new "blame anesthesia" jokes begin! @SOCCA_CritCare @AUA_Anesthesia @APSForg @FAERanesthesia @iars360 @ASALifeline Extracranial Surgery Soon After TBI Tied to Poorer Outcomes medscape.com/viewarticle/ext… Thanks @kelliwburton @Medscape for highlighting!

I will take the blame that it is @MCW_Anesth fault! I do agree that clearance can definitely feel cringy. Hopefully some objective biomarkers are coming in the near future to clarify whose at risk and during what critical window
After all this time, we finally have evidence IT IS Anesthesia’s fault! [I’m joking, I’m joking] I do cringe, however, at the potential demand for NSGY clearance for all early pre-ops! Clinical Outcomes After TBI and Exposure to Extracranial Surgery jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

Appreciative @JAMASurgery for highlighting our work and @MCW_Research for the support
In level I trauma center patients with broad traumatic brain injury severity levels, extracranial surgery and anesthesia was associated with worse functional outcomes and executive cognition at 6 months after injury. ja.ma/46V8HkM

I am not sure if the dynamic MRI is real, but the images are impressive and basic airway management does ventilate and oxygenate.
Watch this mind-blowing dynamic MRI and look what happens to the airway with various head and neck positions This is why basic airway maneuvers save lives! #FOAMed

Interesting study by an excellent team!
Is postoperative blood-brain barrier dysfunction associated with delirium? See our new manuscript: bit.ly/3qSUMfS In 207 patients, postoperative increases in cerebrospinal fluid to plasma albumin ratio were associated with delirium independent of baseline cognition.

I trained with Drs. Patel and Brown, who are amazing physician scientists (a Psychiatrist, and Neurologist/Psychiatrist). It leaves me wondering about my place in the world of “Brain Doctors” as an Anesthesiologist, Intensivist, and Neuroscientist.
