The Belfast "Circle Line": The Proposal - reconnecting Belfast City Centre with @belfastairport, @BELFASTCITY_AIR, rural villages and commuter towns, with services every 15mins, 6am - Midnight, and later at weekends. BUILD the Circle Line already!

If this were true then pedestrianising Donegall Place would make more sense than any of the other proposals. Instead the approach to city hall will be a 2-way road.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has said the draft Eastern Transport Plan (ETP) builds on the success of the Fleadh and shows how transforming public spaces can unlock social, cultural and economic benefits.

It enters the hall of fame – taking it's rightful place alongside all the other bogus strategies & plans that have promised to decouple transportation policy from the private car.
A pattern appears to be forming 😁
New minister… same vision.

In 2026, this is still @deptinfra's best idea.

From the department:
• unwilling to close a cobbled street in CQ.
• extending free parking to 2 hrs in Lisburn and Newry
• yet to implement any recommendations from the @NIAuditOffice - after “accepting them in full” 1+ year ago.
It’s yet another can kicking document.
'The Department for Infrastructure wants to make public transport, walking and cycling more attractive — especially in the city centre — while reducing our dependence on the private car.'

Donegal Place is the exact bit you'd want pedestrianised, the straight leading to city hall. Which we had, when Primark went on fire. This somehow does not have that.

This is my worry for the Eastern Transport Plan 2035 announced today by @deptinfra.
We cannot allow disabled people to be excluded from Belfast City Centre further, by these draft plans.

Great proposals from brilliant researchers throughout this document.
Railway development is entirely absent, likely at request of the DFI for use in another document.
But how can a transport plan exclude and borderline shun railway development?

Modelling conducted as part of the Dept of Infrastructure’s transport plan for Belfast suggests it will increase overall travel times on strategic routes, compared to a ‘do minimum’ scenario, but will improve bus journey times ie. Car journeys become slower, bus quicker.

🧵Infrastructure minister's new transport proposals for Belfast are not that new:
- Expanded pedestrian-priority streets/ new civic spine
(what is pedestrian priority? Not pedestrianised?)
- 20mph speed limit
(good idea - taking cars out of the centre is better)
NO TRAIN PLANS?
The Eastern Transport Plan 2035 aims to reduce car dependency, yet it also acknowledges proposals for York Street Interchange, improvements to the A2 Sydenham Bypass, changes to the A55 and widening the M1.
How does expanding road capacity fit with the aim of getting fewer cars on the road?

More Glider routes? Absolutely.
But why should that mean fewer trains stopping at existing stations?
Belfast needs better buses and better trains, not one at the expense of the other.
The whole point should be giving people more ways to get around, not fewer.

The Eastern Transport Plan 2035 is out.
Some welcome proposals for buses, walking and cycling, but it's disappointing to see rail largely pushed into another plan.
How are we supposed to tackle Belfast's traffic problems without making better use of the railway network we already have?
