Most assume the clocks rolling back right after a Saturday Halloween just happens to line up every so often, yet the November timing was shaped in part by a push to keep daylight saving time through the holiday. Congress extended daylight saving time in 2005, moving the annual fallback from late October to the first Sunday in November starting in 2007. Energy savings was the official case, while candy makers had an obvious reason to support the shift: a later sunset gives trick-or-treaters more evening light and the industry more time to sell the ritual. When Halloween lands on Saturday, the rollback also creates a neat 25-hour Sunday after the festivities. I appreciate a calendar quirk with suspiciously tidy commercial beneficiaries. This morning I have a prayer request.
My daughter is on her way to look at a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house outside the city. I would sleep a whole lot easier at night knowing my granddaughters had grass under their shoes and safe walls around them instead of living in the middle of the city.
It is affordable—barely. She found the listing on Facebook, which means the grandmother in me is also clutching my pearls and praying it isn't an outright scam.
So the prayer is simple: that my girls land in a safe, decent, affordable home where they can finally unpack, breathe, and thrive.
It sure feels like I’m asking for a miracle, doesn’t it?
It breaks my heart that in the wealthiest nation on earth, asking for a modest roof over a young family’s head feels like praying to split the Red Sea.
