The case for heavy loading in return-to-play: slower velocity, a symmetrical demand, and data to support the process @CoachKSammons shares part of his RTP protocol he applied with his NFL athlete coming back from a hamstring injury: both heavy linear and lateral horizontal loading on the 1080 Sprint, then progressive running drills in between Because athletes need real and specific stimuli in multiple planes with objective data so RTP is about development and decisions, not hoping

What a day it was in 📍Madison We took deep dives into: ✅ What a BIG10 basketball off-season looks like and the why behind it ✅ Lessons and evolution in BIG10 hockey plus using load to develop sport-specific mobility ✅ How to manipulate your 1080 to get speeds/forces/stimuli that actually get athletes faster A big thank you to the speakers (Jim Snider, Paul Valukas, and @korfist with his 10-year client award) and all the practitioners that came out to spend a day with us See you at the next one 👌

"When guys got better lateral, their linear went through the freaking roof" The combination of heavy load, self-organization, and using the same muscles but in a slightly different way is a powerful stimulus for athletes As @CoachKSammons outlines, by grinding through heavy exercises just in the sagittal plane can put too much consistent stress on joints. But by changing it up by moving through different planes, athletes can both improve and feel better Shuffling, lateral pushes, eccentric walking, and any other exercise loaded up in the frontal plane is a "hidden gem" with the 1080 Sprint Links 👇

Because the speed is the stimulus It’s not the movement that drives adaptation, it’s the velocity. Change the speed and you change the demand on the tissue The framework: 1️⃣ No movement 2️⃣ Slow movement 3️⃣ Fast movement 4️⃣ Dynamic movement Start heavy and slow, progress toward fast and dynamic, prepare tissue before asking it to perform Load sport-specific actions horizontally and unilaterally, build toward overspeed and change of direction, etc. Because it’s the speed that matters applied to the movements that matter 💣💣 from @CoachKSammons

The numbers tell you what happened, the curves tell you why In this RTP case study from @CoachKSammons, an athlete’s power–distance curves were messy: ❌ Flat tops ❌ Inconsistent peaks ❌ Lots of noise ➡️ Inefficient ground interaction 9 days later the curves cleaned up Not because of more coaching cues, but because a good plan, the constraint of load, and the opportunity to move

Heavy lateral work isn’t just concentric output ➡️➡️ Be intentional about both eccentric and multi-planar loading to create challenging and powerful stimuli for your athletes If you only sprint forward and never challenge frontal plane force production or eccentric control, you’re leaving adaptation on the table Insight from @CoachKSammons during a live demo @ALTIS, taking us through his coaching and loading of shuffling plus all the different ways to apply it 💡 Load the shuffle, own the decel, coach as needed, then watch the linear improve

Looks can lie, but curves don't 🤔 Two reps can look the same and even produce similar outputs, but the strategies for how the athlete got there were very different. When you break down the speed-time curve, the eccentric and concentric phases tell the real story Taller and narrower curves mean faster reversals and better energy transfer, flatter ones don’t. Applying this to rotation, this is how @Ben_Shear turns testing into training by using the graphs to show him what his athletes need to work on. Something just peak velocity can't tell you Good coaching starts with understanding the strategy (the how), not just the result (the what) 👌 🔗 to his presentation 👇

Why do we test athletes? How should this process occur? Do you rely too heavily on data to coach? Are you testing just to affirm your own interventions? @coachbigtoe delivers his Creating a Testing Battery mini-course below. academy.scienceforsport.com/…

Explode ➡️ Relax ➡️ Reorganize 🔁 Explode It’s easy to chase max output one rep at a time, but few sports are played that way. True athleticism is the ability to create force, relax, and reorganize over and over again And eccentric overload accelerates that process. As this is about contract–relax ability, not pure concentric output, it forces the athlete to relax faster because if they fight the load, they'll slow down. Then they have to organize, stop, then reverse the load Tap the screen to add eccentric overload, say “10 reps without stopping,” and let the rhythm take over 📽️ credit: @CoachBigToe

Training is testing. But do you know what that actually means? For the athlete in front of you today, improving performance and staying healthy is about giving them exactly what they need right now. But here’s the catch: planning weeks ahead or checking in once a week or even checking in right before the session starts doesn’t cut it anymore You need to know "is the plan working?" while the plan is going on. Every rep during actual training turns into a test with instant feedback of the athlete's output, giving immediate answers to that question This helps you determine whether you need to turn it up, dial it back, or simply stay the course. Because in the end, stacking each optimized day on top of the last is how you truly drive effective athlete outcomes

Load-Velocity Profiling 🏃‍♂️‍➡️ Stop guessing and start giving athletes the exact load they need for their resisted sprints 🎯 Goal: see how load affects an athlete's sprint speed 👟 Task: sprint maximally at 3 different loads ✅ Result: a profile showing max velocity (predicted velocity with 0 load) and slope (how much speed drops as load increases) From there, select the velocity decrement you want (usually 10%, 25%, 50%) and the profile tells you the exact load to use All it takes is 3 sprints to individualize resisted sprints for your athletes and make sure the reps in real-life match your intended plan Credit: @CoachBigToe
