“I answer that ‘to be justified’ can be taken in two senses: either as referring to the execution and manifestation of justice, and in this way a man is justified, i.e., proved just, by the works performed; or as referring to the infused habit of justice, and in this way one is not justified by works ..... whereas the justice which is by works, i.e., which manifests that one is just, is before men. And it is in this sense that the Apostle says, with God: for not the hearers of the law, but the doers are just before God (Rom 2:13); for if Abraham were justified by works, he has glory, but not before God (Rom 4:2).” — St. Thomas Aquinas, Comm. Gal. 3, L. 4, §. 141.

“I fear one reason why there has been no more good done by preaching, has been because the chief heads and articles in religion have not been explained in a catechetical way…To preach and not to catechize is to build without foundation.”

“The first moving cause of all is grace; the meritorious cause is Christ’s blood; the means of applying, or the condition on our part upon which we are capable at first of receiving so great a privilege, is faith; and the means of continuing in our justified estate is by good works, or new obedience. I say, our first actual pardon, justification, and right to life, is given upon condition of our first faith and repentance; but this estate is continued to us both by faith, Rom. i. 17, and new obedience; these fairly accord. The grace of God will do nothing without the intervention of Christ's merits; and Christ's merits doth not profit us till it be applied by faith; and sound believers will live in a course of new obedience.” —Thomas Manton, Sermon on Romans 8:33

“In vain do we hope that God will be our God, unless in turn we are his people and bear witness to the love of the Father, unless we give the obedience of children to him. In vain do we hope that he will bestow the promised blessings, unless we perform the duties required of us. Now these are the two principal duties demanded—faith and repentance. The former embraces the promises; the latter fulfills the commands; the one answers to the promise of grace—“Believe and thou shalt be saved”; the other is commanded by the evangelical law—“Walk before me, and be thou perfect” (Gen. 17:1).” —Francis Turretin, Institutes of Elenctic Theology, Vol. 2, 12.2.XXVII-XXIX

"That God only can forgive sin, I prove thus. No man can take away sin, unless he be able to infuse Grace, (for as Aquinas saith) with Forgiveness is always infusion of Grace; but no man can infuse Grace, therefore no man can forgive sin. He only can forgive sin, who can remit the Penalty, but ‘tis only God’s Prerogative-Royal to forgive sin." - Thomas Watson, A Body of Practical Divinity Consisting of above One Hundred Seventy Six Sermons on the Lesser Catechism (1692), 805.

When faith is called the instrumental cause of justification this is not to be understood as an instrumental efficient cause physically moving, but an instrumental impulsive cause morally moving.
"The term 'instrumental cause' is indeed transferred by certain [authors], especially by the more recent Scholastic writers and philosophers, also to causes that move morally; and in this genus or order of causes that is called an instrumental cause which moves the will of the agent toward acting, not by its own goodness, dignity, or merit, but by the goodness, dignity, or merit of another, principal, cause. ... But an instrumental cause, so called in the moral order, is the same as a less principal impulsive cause." — Bl. Johann Musaeus, De aeterno electionis decreto, an eius aliqua extra Deum causa impulsiva detur, nec ne? (2.71)

“When the Minister baptiseth, I beleeue that Christ with his hand reached as it were from heauen, besprinkleth the child baptised with water, with his bloud, to remission of sinnes” —Zanchi, Miscel. li. 3 pa. 134 “Not unfitly do the Fathers teach, that effect of the Holy Spirit moving upon the waters, which Moses describeth in Genesis 1 to be a resemblance of that which is, the Holy Spirit performeth in the water of baptism. For as there he rested upon those waters, that he might cherish and prepare them for the producing of living creatures, and for the generation of all things: so the Holy Spirit sits upon the waters of baptism, and sits as it were abroad upon them, and blesseth them, and thence doth cherish, regenerate, and animate the elect, and makes them fruitful unto all good works.” —ibid., De. Trib. Eloh.

“Don't think that just because you call yourself a Christian, you cannot for that reason stumble over the stone of stumbling… Let there be justice in you, but let it be from grace, let it come to you from God; don't let it be your own.” St. Augustine Sermon 169

John Flavel on how we may speak of faith as a condition of the Covenant of Grace: "An Antecedent Condition signifying no more than an Act of ours, which though it be neither perfect in every degree, nor in the least meritorious of the benefit conferred; nor performed in our own natural strength; yet according to the constitution of the Covenant, is required of us in order to the blessings consequent thereupon by vertue of the Promise: and consequently description the benefits and mercies granted in the Promise in this order are, and must be suspended by the Donor or Disposer of them, until it be performed. Such a Condition we affirm Faith to be." -John Flavel, Planelogia, pg. 248

"Oh, how much selfishness, and how little love of God, are too often found among those who contend for supposed true doctrine, true worship, true discipline, and the true church! Who can say that their zeal for these things eats up themselves, their charity, their peaceableness, and their brethren? The same men who will not yield in an opinion, a formality, or a singularity for the church's peace and concord, or for the interest of love and the healing of our wounds, will just as hardly yield a jot of their wealth, their worldly honor, their carnal interest, or their selfish wills. This shows that their zeal and seeming orthodoxy and wisdom—as it is in them—is not from above, but from beneath (James 3:15–17)." — Richard Baxter, The Crucifying of the World by the Cross of Christ

"It is far easier to change your opinions than to change your heart and life. Simply holding the truth will never save a man unless he also loves and lives it. This is what St. James means when he speaks of the uselessness of a dead, fruitless faith—a faith that does not work through love, and does not lead the soul to obedience. To believe there is a God while you neglect and disobey Him is not likely to please Him. To believe there is a heaven, while you neglect it and prefer the world, will never bring you there. To believe in your duty but not perform it, to know that sin is evil and yet continue in it—this is to sin with greater guilt, without excuse, and not the path to God's acceptance or justification." — Richard Baxter, An Urgent Call to Young Men

"A disposition to good works is necessary to justification, being the qualification of an active and lively faith. Good works of all sorts are necessary to our continuance in the state of justification, and so to our final absolution, if God give opportunity. But they are not the cause of, but only a precedent qualification or condition to final forgiveness and eternal bliss. If then, when we speak of the conditions of the covenant of grace, by condition we understand whatsoever is required on our part, as precedent, concomitant, or subsequent to justification, repentance, faith, and obedience are all conditions. But if by condition we understand what is required on our part as the cause of the good promised though only instrumental, faith or belief in the promises of free mercy is the only condition." –– John Ball, A Treatise of the Covenant of Grace, p. 20 Note: This work was massively influential for the formation of the Westminster Standards, and was widely popular among the Assemblymen.
