Everyone is focused on making AI models faster. But the model isn’t always the bottleneck. We found just 3 pieces of supporting code consuming ~20% of GPU time in an autonomous-driving LiDAR pipeline running on @nvidia Thor. @Code_Metal_AI Metal optimized them in less than a day. AI is making it easier than ever to write code. The NEXT frontier and harder problem is making sure that code actually performs on the hardware it runs on. That’s the Code-to-Metal gap. And it’s everywhere

But in a real product, the model is surrounded by supporting code that runs alongside it on every frame – often left exactly as it was first written, with inefficiencies that can slow the whole system down, use excessive compute, and drive up costs. We saw this in an open-source LiDAR perception pipeline running on @nvidia Thor hardware. Three custom CUDA kernels accounted for ~20% of GPU kernel time.
