My latest: there’s pain at the pump. Some of this is inescapable fallout from conflicts in the Middle East and Russia/Ukraine. But much of it is self-imposed. The clean fuel regulations cost 13.57 cents a litre for diesel and 12.24 cents a litre for gasoline. To add insult to injury, tax is charged on top of these costs. Even worse, to comply with them, refiners must blend in biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel. Canada is not self-sufficient and imports over half of what it needs, predominantly from the US.
Somehow, in the middle of a trade war and an energy crisis, it has gone unnoticed that Canada — the aspiring energy superpower — has artificially made itself dependent on the United States for fuel.

FACT CHECK:
Claim: “We now have under construction 97 new car plants. For 48 years we had none”.
Actual: 1 plant - by EV startup Slate.
In 1978 the US had 55 plants & made 12.8M cars. In 2025 it also had 55 plants & made 10.3M cars.
153 plants would make ~30M cars.
For who?

This man is a hero.
Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian captain of flydubai Flight 1073, fought back after being stabbed in the cockpit.
Despite being severely injured, he managed to unlock the cockpit door - allowing Israeli passengers and the Emirati crew to intervene and save all the passengers.
Together, their extraordinary courage saved 174 lives.
Indian. Israeli. Emirati.
Different nationalities. One extraordinary act of courage. 🇮🇳🇮🇱🇦🇪
We wish Captain Machchhar a full and speedy recovery.

Adjust for population & the “freeloading” rhetoric fails hard & fast:
- 🇨🇦s buy about US$8,000 per capita in US goods.
- 🇺🇸s buy about US$1,100 per capita in CDN goods.
That’s 7x MORE per capita.
Imagine a business insulting that type of committee customer.
Not smart.

Every Challenger that Bombardier builds in 🇨🇦 has 2 Honeywell engines built in Arizona. 🇺🇸.

Not so smart.

If Canada must be dragged into a trade war, might as well be when oil is US$87/barrel, gold is US$4600/oz, potash is US$400/tonne, aluminum is US$3250/tonne and copper is US$6.50/lb 📈
Our relative position is much better than it was in January 2025.

Seems relevant: Canada is creating jobs at a rate that is roughly 4x that in the United States.

ALT Line chart titled "The pace of job growth in Canada has outpaced job growth in the United States" showing cumulative percent change in employment since December 2024 for Canada and the United States. Canada's employment has grown 1.34% while US employment has increased just 0.34%, meaning Canadian job growth has outpaced the United States by nearly four to one. Canada's employment growth accelerated sharply from 0.98% in June 2026 to 1.34% in July 2026, the highest rate in the period shown, while US employment growth has remained relatively stable between 0.3% and 0.36% from April through July 2026.

It’s pretty incredible that you can kill a cop in Canada (after holding him hostage and taunting him about the wife and three daughters he’ll leave behind) and even have to opportunity to be arrested again

People have been asking why the pursuit was called off. Here’s why.
Police pursuits are governed by strict rules, and public safety must always come first. The decision to continue or terminate a pursuit isn’t based solely on how busy the roads are. Officers must also consider the manner in which the suspect is driving, speeds, weather, visibility, and the risk posed to innocent people.
The pursuing officer, the supervising officer, and the dispatcher all share responsibility for continuously assessing the risk. If the danger to the public outweighs the need to immediately apprehend the suspect, the pursuit must be terminated.
If a fleeing vehicle strikes and seriously injures or kills an innocent person, the decision to continue the pursuit will be scrutinized, and those involved will be held accountable for whether it remained justified.
The priority is always to protect innocent lives. There is often another opportunity to identify and arrest the suspect. There isn’t another chance to save an innocent person once tragedy occurs. Public safety must always remain paramount.

The “motor vehicle” action is the surprise.
It is not* a broad new tariff on 🇨🇦 vehicles or auto parts.
It’s largely a wide retaliatory basket covering everything from cement & plywood to electronics, machinery, & furniture. Conventional Chapter 87 auto parts are absent. /3

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw was asked by a journalist what evidence he has that any of the shootings this weekend in Toronto involved illegal guns.
Brian Smith retweeted
Toronto Police initially responded to this as an active shooter, which was the appropriate response based on the information available at the time. Investigators quickly determined it appears to have been a targeted gunfight between two individuals, not an indiscriminate active shooter targeting the public. That distinction matters, but it doesn’t lessen the horror.
Two men are dead, five people were injured, and innocent people and families were caught in the crossfire while enjoying a summer evening at Toronto’s Salsa on St. Clair festival.
The calculation for these fu$&! has to change. The risk of being identified, arrested, prosecuted, convicted, and spending multiple multiple multiple years behind bars must outweigh any perceived reward of shooting a rival. Until that balance shifts, reckless public gun violence like this will continue to put innocent lives at risk. More families shattered and for what? For enjoying a summer festival with family and friends. This is by no means the Toronto I grew up in or policed for three decades. Toronto is not nearly as safe as it once was. To many illegal guns and to many willing to use them. And, fewer people who want to hold those thugs accountable.
