I am in a council tax band A-D property and on a means-testing basis I shouldn’t be getting a £100 handout from the government to help with my energy bill.
It’s a stupid idea with a stupid test.
Most of my neighbours probably shouldn’t be getting it either.
I gave a £50 one-off donation to a charity last week and I will do another one this week.

The core aim of Labour think tanks like Torsten Bell's Resolution Foundation to apply National Insurance to savings and rental income is being accomplished by stealth.
But to do it all in one go was seen as too politically difficult, so Labour is increasing the tax rate on this income by 2% a year. In a couple of years they'll have got this supplementary tax rate up to 8%, matching the standard rate of employee NI. But of course the more you tax something, the less you get of it. As the OBR has confirmed this means fewer rental properties and higher rents. It will also mean fewer savings.
The OBR noted that the rental income tax hike risks “leading to a steady rise in rents through two effects":
“First, potential landlords are less likely to enter the market, reducing long-run rental supply, which risks a steady long-term rise in rents if demand outstrips supply – which we think is more likely than not".
“Second, landlords are likely to pass on more of these costs to renters in the long-run through a combination of some current landlords leaving, thereby giving more price setting power to remaining landlords, and greater long-run flexibility to raise rents.”
The left hates savers and landlords but the economy needs both of them. It's really sad that the left's prejudice continues to direct Labour budgets.

If HMRC are allowed to take money from individuals’ bank accounts, as proposed in the budget today, then we are heading to a dark place.
This tool could be used against anyone deemed to be a threat by the government of the day.
🚨 NEW: John Healey is set to announce the following in his Budget later
- The gas standing charge will be scrapped to save £27 a year on a typical bill
- Green levies on energy bills will be scraped "for good"
- NHS prescription charges will be frozen at £9.90 for another year
- Poorer households on benefits will receive extra help with energy bills before January's sharp rises
- The VAT cut on electricity bills, which was due to expire in April, will be extended (though it's not clear if this will be announced in the Budget or separately)
- The Government will remove the link between gas and electricity prices, which currently inflates household bills, "in the long term"
- Banks will face higher taxes, with the surcharge on their profits potentially rising from 3% to 8%, making it the Budget’s biggest revenue raiser
- HMRC will be given powers to seize money from the bank accounts of people who fail to pay their tax
- The freeze on rail fares will reportedly not be extended beyond April
- Online retailers like Amazon, eBay and Temu will be made responsible for collecting unpaid VAT from sellers to fund a cut in business rates for high street shops
- The thresholds for income tax will be frozen again so another half a million people may be dragged into the higher rate
- January's planned increase in fuel duty will be cancelled
- Pensioners relying solely on the state pension will see their tax-free allowance rise to £13,036, in line with the pension increase, so they don't pay income tax
- Billions in long-term borrowing to invest in defence firms and raise the share of GDP spent on defence (without breaking fiscal rules, as the investments are expected to generate returns)
- The upcoming "Your First Home" scheme will be made more generous to provide greater support for middle-income earners
- The Budget will also assume the Rosebank oil field is approved, which will generate "significant tax revenues"

It was never about the money. It’s spite and bigotry and nothing more.
And what of the 6,500 teachers we seem to have conveniently forgotten about? Wasn’t that precisely what the VAT on independent school fees was supposed to fund?
No discernible improvement in state education, but considerable disruption to independent schools and the children and families they serve. Utter lunacy.
‘Independent schools face mounting financial pressure after the government’s introduction of 20 per cent VAT on fees in January last year. The Independent Schools Council estimated that more than 100 private schools have closed since the tax took effect.’

In 2015–16, Britain spent £216 billion a year on welfare.
By 2030–31, the OBR forecasts that figure will reach £407 billion.
Britain needs a serious debate about the sustainability of its welfare system.

UK industrial electricity prices sit around 26p/kWh:
▪️Highest among the 25 International Energy Agency member countries
▪️4 times higher than USA
▪️50% more expensive than France and Germany.
It’s hardly a surprise that so many UK businesses cannot survive due to energy generated production costs.

Climate policy does near-nothing for fires
We need better fire policy (prescribed burns, let some burn) and better climate info

HMRC can now seize money from your bank account without even having a meeting.
As someone who's been debanked, this sets a dark precedent.
Reform will fight this at every turn.
How to kill small businesses flat
Another dumb decision
The hidden tax measure in the Budget is huge for people paying tax under self-assessment - sole traders, partners, landlords, retired investors.
For 6th April 2028-29, you currently pay 50% of your income tax late in the tax year in question (in January 2029), 50% just after the year end (in July 2029) with any make-up payment in January 2030.
Under the new proposals you will pay your tax perhaps monthly or quarterly (TBC) from April 2029 onwards. A rough analysis suggests the impact is to draw about 50% of your tax bill forward, a huge cashflow boost to HMRC and a significant funding issue for the self-employed.
The Treasury recognises this, and expects to raise £1.3bn of additional tax in 29/30 as a result of this change.
The cashflow impact of the accelerated charge will send some businesses to the wall.

This tax will fall on all of us as borrowers or depositors. Banks can only COLLECT taxes, not PAY them. All taxes fall on humans.

Real wages for British people have barely grown in 20 years.
The cost of your weekly shop keeps going up.
Energy bills keep going up.
And the Tory and Labour politicians who did this do not care.
All we learnt today is that the tax burden is going up AGAIN to the highest since WW2.
That Britain’s economy will grow even slower than expected next year.
And inflation is going to go up AGAIN next year.
So British people keep getting poorer and taxed up to the eyeballs.
Reform will reverse all this.
Raise the personal tax allowance to £20k.
No tax on overtime.
Scrap net zero to cut your energy bills by £250.
We will get Britain working again. 💪🇬🇧
