Well said Ian Botham: “Whitehall is turning England into a tinderbox. Defra’s response to climate change has been to sharply increase vegetation. Over the past 20 years its cuts in upland cattle and sheep grazing led to a 25 per cent increase in highly flammable grass. Another genius move has been to stop preventative burning of heather. During damp winter months these burns safely prune the dead material which is then replaced by younger plants. It is the dead heather that is combustible. And thanks to Defra we now have 74 per cent more of it. The winter burns used to create firebreaks. Now we have huge expanses of continuous, ageing vegetation. The result is disaster after disaster. When Downing Street starts asking questions of Defra, jaws will drop. Why did it further restrict winter burns despite the National Fire Chiefs Council warning this risked the lives of "firefighters and the public"? How come it also ignored the pleading of top wildfire scientists not to go ahead? In 2007, officials said that stopping winter burns would produce "a much increased risk" of wildfires. Which is exactly what we are getting. Rewilded land going up in smoke. Other countries have learnt the hard way. Australia and California tried suppressing the prescribed burns that indigenous people had used for tens of thousands of years. By some calculations, dozens died before their governments saw sense. What will it take for ours to wake up? This is a crisis caused by years of Whitehall grabbing power away from the countryside.”

I’m happy and relieved to say I won my legal case against Essex Police and Crime Commissioner Roger Hirst. Mr Hirst has admitted liability, apologised and paid substantial damages. 1/4 telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/07…

Common sense from @FraserNelson on Burnham's foolish social care spending splurge. "Creating a new NHS for care homes? It’s a disastrous idea, unaffordable for a government already facing a spending crisis. If Andy Burnham’s reaction to problems is “let’s take a difficult decision to spend even more and raise tax” then his government may be quite shortlived. This is all rather simple. Those who can for their care should pay. There is no scandal about selling your home to pay for care: people should be free to sell a house, or any other asset, if they face a big bill", says Fraser. Spending is out of control and debt is spiralling. A big new spending programme is little more than pure stupidity.

Andy Burnham believes that prosperity can be achieved by re-organising local government, and then taking money from “the rich”. This is the politics of zero sum; it has a long history, all of it disastrous. He has the wrong diagnosis, the wrong priorities and the wrong solutions. My job now is to expose and challenge this at every turn. Mrs Thatcher’s genius was that she understood that national prosperity was in the hands of the people, not the State. She had a vision for the country that went beyond tax and spend; she rebuilt Britain’s self-confidence and oversaw the fastest rise in working people’s income by unlocking enterprise, ownership and personal responsibility, using less regulation and lower taxes. The choice is now clear. Andy Burnham's Labour Party offering state control and redistribution or my new Conservative Party offering enterprise, responsibility and growth just like Thatcher did.   Our offer is a vision in which prosperity comes from the people, not the State and where everyone, whether rich or poor has a brighter future.
Margaret Thatcher’s “genius” rebuilt Britain’s self-confidence, Kemi Badenoch has said. Her tribute comes after Andy Burnham attacked Thatcher’s legacy, saying the country had taken a “series of wrong turns in the 1980s” as “political power was centralised and economic power was privatised” 🔗: telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

STOP KEIR STARMER'S PONY CULL 👉 SaveThePonies.com
This is total madness from another unaccountable quango. The government must overrule Natural England and stop it immediately. Keir Starmer is on his way to making his last acts in office the shameful underfunding of our military and the mass slaughter of Dartmoor ponies.

They are no longer the Labour Party, they are the Welfare Party. It doesn’t matter who is in charge of these people, the party for Benefits Street will tax us all into poverty to pay for more welfare. Pat McFadden has said in private what he and the Prime Minister deny in public. As I’ve said repeatedly, Labour MPs don’t understand where money comes from. They think our taxes are their money to spend, rather than the result of the hard work of the people in our country who deserve so much better. The Conservative party is the only party holding Labour to account, as Reform, Lib Dems the SNP and others join Labour in demanding the state pay more and more benefits.
Labour's Welfare Secretary admitted to Peter Mandelson what he won’t tell you. Labour raised your taxes to pay for more benefits.

The Mandy Files — 2. May 2025 Another zinger from Cabinet Minister Pat McFadden to Mandelson: ‘Every meeting I have is “who can we tax in order to pay benefits to others”. They’re asking the wrong questions.’ Wow! Just wow!!

Confirmation in today's release of the Mandelson Files from Pat McFadden, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, that the primary motivation of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) is to tax productive people to funnel money to those on benefits. We have been saying this for a long time but it's good to have clear evidence from a cabinet minister that it is indeed true.

Working for Keir Starmer is now one of the most dangerous occupations in the UK. There are few known survivors. Olly Robbins is just the latest fatality. All sacrificed to divert from a reality we can all see -our country deserves so much better than this man as our Prime Minister.

Keir Starmer has now sacked everyone involved in Mandelson’s appointment - Chris Wormald, Morgan McSweeney, Olly Robbins. But Starmer was ultimately the one who approved it. He’s got no one left to sack. It’s time for him to take responsibility. He should go.

It is preposterous for Starmer to claim he did not know Mandelson failed security vetting. If the Prime Minister doesn’t know what’s happening in his own office, he shouldn’t be in charge of our country. He should go.
PM was not aware Lord Mandelson failed security vetting for US ambassador job until this week, UK government says bbc.in/41D0z8g
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The government's claim that the PM was unaware of Lord Mandelson's vetting failure contradicts Starmer's February statement that security vetting "gave [Mandelson] clearance for the role." bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

The Prime Minister appointed Peter Mandelson before the vetting had been completed, vetting Mandelson failed. Starmer then said full due process was followed. THAT is misleading Parliament. I'm only holding him to the same standards to which he’s held previous Prime Ministers - that if they mislead parliament, they should resign. In these dangerous times, Britain cannot afford to have a Prime Minister who the country doesn't trust. Starmer has betrayed our national security. He should go.

Well said. I think all those who have gong and titles and who were caught up in scandals that damaged others should lose them. So when are you giving up your title, given your role in the Post Office scandal?

CHAGOS SURRENDER UPDATE Labour has just pulled Monday’s vote in the House of Lords. The @Conservatives had put out a three-line Whip - an exceptional step in the Upper House, taken perhaps once every three or four years - and ministers evidently concluded that their Bill would fall. We have secured a breathing space. It is now up to Trump and the people around him. If the president sticks to what he said this week, the deal is off. If he allows himself to be talked around by the State Department’s permanent officials, it will come back. In any event, the man who deserves credit for winning the parliamentary battle, almost completely outside the public eye, is Lord @MartinCallanan, who led for the Tories. In terms of procedure, he played an absolute blinder, drawing things out expertly to give opponents time to organise. I am proud of all those who were involved in the campaign, especially Claire and the @GreatBritishPAC. And, most of all, of the Chagossians themselves. Thank you. Mersi ek felisitasion It is, I admit, a humiliating thing for Britain that the final decision should be in the hands of our American allies. We ought to have put a stop to the whole business ourselves. Still, for the first time in 14 months, I am starting to think we might win. 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇮🇴
