One bottleneck for the AI buildout is skilled labor
US manufacturers are working existing staff longer and paying up for new ones:
- Hours per worker are outpacing headcount growth in 7 out of 10 sectors
- Workers who switch jobs are getting ~10% pay increases, about double the ~5% for those who stick around

Since 2019, imports of AI hardware have grown faster than US production in every category
US production vs. imports:
- Computers: +46% vs. +366%
- Comms equipment: +87% vs. +175%
- Semis: +76% vs. +131%
- Grid & electrical equipment: -7% vs. +69%

Smart move. Projects go smoother when the town sees something it actually wanted come out of the deal.

GOOD NEWS: A data center developer just put up $15M for a new animal shelter in Ellis County, Texas ☀️
The developer is Compass Datacenters, which runs a data center campus in Red Oak.
Why it matters: the SPCA of Texas closed its Ellis County care center in April 2025, and local rescue volunteers stepped up to fill the gap. Now there's $15M for a new one.
Good dogs, good neighbors. We love to see it.

Yup! Data centers can actually lower your power bill contrary to the popular narrative.
More data centers don't automatically mean higher electricity bills.
In fact, research from the Electric Power Research Institute found that doubling data center capacity was associated with roughly 4% lower residential electricity rates between 2015 and 2024.
Why? Large customers can help spread the fixed costs of the electric grid across more electricity sales.
If we get policy right, growing electricity demand can help make power more affordable. Here's how we do it.

About $19M in tax revenue could be headed to Central City, Iowa ☀️
That's what city officials say a proposed data center could generate, with roughly half going straight to the city.
Mayor Don Gray's take: "That's a lot of tax money that a small community can use." He says it could help Central City keep its relatively low property taxes.

Do you go around demanding every single business in your town spell out how they benefit the community? Data centers spend money, employ people, and pay taxes (lots of taxes) just like any other business. Data center startups should be applauded, not relentlessly interrogated.
I read the article twice and still don't understand what the benefit is for the community.

Concerns about data centers driving up electricity costs are legitimate. But stopping construction isn't the only answer.
Policymakers can establish rules that fairly allocate infrastructure costs while allowing investment.

Truckers just came out of a nearly four-year freight downturn, & data center construction is part of why. Operational data centers keep generating time-critical freight long after the cranes leave. Moratoriums & slow-walked permits would cut off that lifeline for the trucking industry. buff.ly/Png2gdr

📊New polling shows: 2026 is not the “data center election.”
@nytimes and @SienaResearch polling asked likely voters to name the one issue most important to their vote this November:
The economy: 23%
Immigration: 10%
Cost of living: 9%
AI and data centers: less than 0.5%
