Genuine pleasure to catch up with Phoebe and Jason at the North Coast Surf Club - their commitment to ensuring surfing lessons are accessible to local kids is so impressive. They wrote to me after some of the kids became really sick due to sewage getting pumped into Thurso East.

Thanks @DavidGreen4CSR for stopping to chat with us at @scotlibdems about how we end the need for food banks in Scotland.

The government says this is an emergency, but it is trapped in the headlights.
They have thrown money, statements and ministers at this.
And yet 100 people are dying every single month because of drugs.
If this really is the government trying its best, what hope is there?

The SNP spent Tuesday afternoon debating another independence referendum, again.
Not the cost of living or the NHS, but the same old debate about the constitution.
Liberal Democrats will always focus on fixing the issues that matters most.

In particular, I want to thank my friend and colleague @DavidGreen4CSR for putting forward the amendment
I am also grateful for the wisdom and expertise of industry experts for their input into forming our policy
The games industry needs support, and this is a big step forward

"It is utterly unacceptable that young Caithness surfers – many of them still kids – get sick when they are trying to enjoy our coastline.
No child, no person should ever have to worry about getting into the sea because of what has been discharged into it."

Sewage was dumped 100,041 times in Scotland in 2025.
Yet even that number is likely an underestimate of the true scale of the problem.
Even with these extra monitors Scotland is still way behind England where 100% of sewage overflows are monitored.

To make matters worse, while this is happening the government owned water company is paying out bumper bonuses to its executives.

The Channel 4 reporting sparks big questions for the Reform party.
People are fed up with the sleaze and scandal infecting our politics.
Malcolm Offord must do the right thing and categorically rule out ever having accepted or benefited from these kinds of dodgy donations.

A prudent example of how this might work in practice for rural communities would be to compare how Orkney and Caithness differ in maternity provision.
Orkney, with its own NHS Board, fairs considerably better than Caithness, within NHS Highland, largely centralised to Inverness.
Scotland's NHS will be split in two, down from 14 health boards, in plans set out in today's Programme for Government. @heraldscotland

This fire has caused significant disruption and damage, forcing families from their homes.
The communities at the heart of this deserve clarity on what went wrong and why the decision to turn down legitimate offers of support as the fire spread was made.

I welcome the Competition and Markets Authority's recognition that households in Scotland - especially those in the Far North - face higher costs and fewer choices. Stronger consumer protections for heating oil users are long overdue.

Coastguard Rescue Officers play a vital role in keeping people safe.
Removing the modest payment they receive for training and operational duties risks making it harder to recruit and retain volunteers, ultimately weakening a service coastal communities rely on.

Over a fifth of the local economy in the north Highlands, and around one in four jobs, are supported by the nuclear industry in Caithness and north Sutherland.
The only industry in the last 165 years to reverse post-clearance north Highland population decline.
