The BBC has always been in times of flux. Even at the beginning in the 1920s, it had to work hard against sceptics about its role and value. So this latest wave of questioning is nothing new.
But the BBC has also been our greatest cultural asset promoting British values abroad. It was a beacon of truth in the dark days of the 1940s. It created what was one of the first significant news websites that could be trusted. It transformed the way we could see natural history on TV. With BBC Bitesize, Play School and Open University, it made television an education resource. It led with investigative journalism and provided a platform for world class cultural events and much more.
When I worked in rural India, I could hear waves of repeated mutterings as the word that "...the BBC is here" which meant something of value to all that heard it.
So when the BBC faces its latest challenges and the need to cut back on spending, it is disappointing that we hear from the leadership only the language of accountancy, with salami cuts of budgets. Together with that, what we need to hear is the language of leadership and what the BBC's value is to the nation.
From an organisation which is all about the telling of stories, it has not been great at telling its own story.
We need to hear, what the BBC can still provide. What it can do that no one else can. How on foreign shores, it still can promote the best of Britain. When society is fractious, it needs to explain the mission on its own coat of arms, that : 'Nation Shall Speak Unto Nation.' That's what we need to hear from the top at the BBC, now more than ever.

Was there not an instrumental bit of the Ford Super Sunday music that Keys would talk over showing the tables/results, future Sky games or after breaks sure it was the same music not a different track?

So we had to sell Anderson to comply with rules that Man City haven’t followed and Anderson now plays for City. It’s all just a big fucking joke isn’t it.

Point of order. The Director of BBC Sport has no management function over the decisions made in Local Radio. That might change in the future, of course, but under the present structure he has no say.
According to a Telegraph columnist the BBC head of sport is due to make a "savings announcement" at 2pm on Wednesday. Fully expecting local-radio sport and #ncfc commentary resources to be absolutely hammered.

A thought on football…
Man Utd, who haven’t been a great team for many years, have now bought three (more) expensive midfielders.
Aston Villa, who won a European trophy, have to sell to avoid punishment.
The system, which was supposed to impose financial stability, now does everything to preserve the advantage of the top teams. There is almost no jeopardy for them and no path to the top for the rest.
It works if you see the Premier League as basically five or six famous teams, with a supporting cast who don’t really matter. And that, I suspect, is a lot of people, around the world.
If your passion is solely for the famous clubs and the superstar players, then fine. There’s a half-and-half scarf waiting for you.
But for the rest of us, there is a gnawing feeling of disconnect and disappointment, exacerbated by the actions of FIFA.
When I grew up, watching from the terraces at Upton Park, football was a game that belonged to the fans. Does it still?

Time to remember that we finished 12th last season with Bruno, Tonali & Gordon. We didn’t get UCL again because our big players failed to turn up time and time again.
They’ve all managed to jump ship, believing that they deserve better. Well, WE deserved better from them. #NUFC

A very sad day. Echoes of KK’s first departure as manager in Howe’s eyes in recent weeks & months, at the end of a road which began with the owners’ failure to mind the shop (with either a CEO or sporting director) early last summer. But what times Howe gave us. A fine man. #NUFC

Idea for Ashes tests venues - group them. There should always be a Northern match, and a Midlands, and a South/ SWest.
Lords & Oval always get one, so one each of:
* OT/ Leeds/ CLS
* TB/ Edg
* Cardiff/ Soton
Nothing North of Trent Bridge in '27 is crazy
I know she doesn't tweet much these days but sad news today that @NatalieAOLeary is leaving R1. I'm gutted!
Hi @graham_mcmillan will there be any kind of announcement on the 5live coverage of the Commonwealth Games this year? Be interesting to know who's involved
The easiest way to fix the 48-team World Cup format:
Group winners go straight to the Round of 16.
Second-placed teams play third-placed teams in a playoff round for the remaining spots.
That way, winning your group actually means something, and the format still keeps the drama.
It really isn’t that complicated.
