From delay to delivery. 🏗️🔥 A year ago, I vowed that a new contractor would be appointed for the Sarah Baartman Centre of Remembrance in Hankey, Eastern Cape, and that the project would be put back on the path to completion after more than 10 years of delays. 🤝 This morning, I made good on that promise by handing over the site to the newly appointed contractor. Once completed, the Sarah Baartman Centre of Remembrance will honor her memory with the dignity and respect she deserves, while creating jobs and opportunities for the local community. This is how we build a better South Africa. #LetsBuildSA 💙🇿🇦

Today, I announced that 13 additional construction companies have been removed from the cidb’s National Register of Contractors following findings of misrepresentation in their applications to upgrade their registration grades. Since taking office in July 2024, 75 contractors have been removed for breaching registration requirements, compared to just 1 contractor blacklisted between 2002 and June 2024. This marks a decisive shift in how we enforce accountability in the built environment. We also announced that Moriel Infrastructure Group which had gained much public attention has also been blacklisted for various offences. We are strengthening the cidb’s verification processes and addressing non-compliance to ensure that contractors doing business with the state have the financial and technical capacity to deliver. Public money must be protected, honest businesses must be able to compete fairly, and those who defraud the state must face consequences.

Tomorrow, I will provide an update on our efforts to hold non-performing contractors accountable and remove those who fail to meet the required standards from doing business with the state. I will be joined by CIDB Board Chairperson Khulile Nzo and CEO Bongani Dladla. Since 2024, we have intensified efforts to ensure that contractors entrusted with public infrastructure projects meet the required standards and deliver on their commitments. Those who do business with the state must be held to account and we will continue working to restore integrity, protect public funds and ensure that our infrastructure projects deliver for South Africans.
