DPWI FACILITATES WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION MEETING TO STRENGTHEN UNITY AND LEADERSHIP
The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI), through its Gender Unit, is facilitating a two-day Women in Construction meeting from 21 to 22 October 2026 at the Protea Hotel in Hatfield, Pretoria.
Attended by South African Women in Construction (SAWIC) leadership from various provinces, the meeting seeks to address the challenges facing the organisation, including leadership-related issues, while promoting unity, collaboration and effective leadership among its members.
Held under the theme “Building Unity and Strengthening Leadership,” the meeting provides a platform for provincial leaders to engage on issues affecting the organisation and explore ways to strengthen its leadership structures and promote a common vision for women in the construction sector.
Officially opening the meeting on 21 October 2026, the Chief Director of the Gender Unit, Dr Mveleli Gqwede, welcomed the delegates and outlined the purpose of the engagement. He reaffirmed DPWI's commitment to fostering unity among women in the construction industry and supporting initiatives that advance their participation and empowerment.
Dr Gqwede also highlighted the history of SAWIC and its critical role in the construction sector. Established in 1997 by the late Minister of Public Works, the Honourable Stella Sigcau, SAWIC has played an important role in advancing gender equality and the economic empowerment of previously disadvantaged women in the construction industry.
The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the organisation, address internal challenges and promote a united leadership that can advance the interests of women in construction.
