This is probably the most important clip from NXR to come out this year, especially if you count yourself an enemy of Christian Nationalism. Please watch and share.

The Bible is very clear that God wanted His people to “tolerate” others worshipping other gods. /s
So American Christians should, too.
What an absurd position.
Gavin Ortlund filmed a video called “The Dangers of Christian Nationalism.” One of his chief concerns is the loss of religious toleration, a first amendment right that Ortlund considers to be sacrosanct. This is fascinating for a number of reasons.
First of all, it reveals that Gavin has a religious devotion to the Constitution, over and above what he finds in Scripture. To be specific, it is the Constitution as viewed through the lens of 20th Century Liberalism. The founders never intended the 1A to protect demonic statues and Islamic ghettos.
Secondly, Gavin does a Jesus juke, explaining that we actually win by losing. After accusing Christian nationalists of commingling the spiritual and the political realms, he actually does that himself by encouraging Christians to accept worldly losses (and even death) in order to be more than conquerors spiritually.
Thirdly, Gavin’s a priori commitments to liberalism actually prevent him from what he says at the end, “So let us by all means do everything we can to now bring his lordship into every aspect of life, in all the ways that we can, including the political realm.” Ortlund has already conceded that public idolatry must be tolerated! So it’s not “by all means” in any sense at all. It would be more accurate to say “by all means that aren’t mean.”
This is very much the same loser theology promoted by Phil Johnson and others, wherein we should vote for godly candidates and laws, but just don’t take it too far since we win by losing.
Of course, this is all designed to ultimately discourage Christians from political engagement, or worse to permit them to vote for the left. As Gavin’s father Ray Ortlund posted in 2024, “Never Trump. This time Harris. Always Jesus.” 🤮

Religious tolerance at the founding was essentially between Christian denominations and only at the federal level. Every State had at least one or more of the following : established denominations, religious tests for office, or taxpayer funded clergy.

Yeah people get real squirmy when you rightfully point out that to the founding fathers, freedom of religion was essentially freedom to practice your specific branch or denomination of Christianity

Gavin: we should not cherry pick the forms CN from church history just because we like it.
Gavin 2 minutes later: cherry picks his favorite forms of Christian influence in church history….

James Lindsay is functionally no different than any other liberal who celebrated the death of Charlie Kirk.

I havent much to add to @DefiantBaptist take except that this type of heresy was once a hangable offense.
Leading your flock to the wolves den is tantamount to treason in the spiritual field (for those of you who still only understand "mUh CoNsTiTuTiOn")

I'm wondering if we can all use the "clerical error" excuse now? As in "Sorry officer, I made a clerical error when I drove 100 mph in 55 mph zone."
Or does it only work for non-white immigrants?

one of my biggest issues with these guys is that they seem to think that by appearing weak and effeminate they will attract more people to the Gospel, which is the absolute opposite of the way to appeal to men. so they appeal to more women, and those women then select more of these men to lead, and the cycle continues and continues until their vision of God is this universalist friend that wants everyone to hold hands.
God is love, but God is also justice. they pervert His message by leaving off the last part, and then they become increasingly more afraid of masculine men who want to have a more fullsome view and relationship with God.
not to mention doing this while co-opting secular texts as Gospel and elevating them above Gospel, as you rightly pointed out.

Thank you for pointing out the obvious problem of religious tolerance when God judges entire nations for religious tolerance. Ortlund’s position is not biblical nor is it historical Christianity.

Yeah, the constitution is probably the greatest idol of the average American Christian. That and probably football. I say this as a very patriotic citizen and an avid football fan myself. I too recognize that these are potential blind spots for myself as well

Remember, when a small account troll says mean things, all the respectable anti-CN mid-eva influencers will tell you it's CNs fault, and a reflection on the ideals of CN.
When the fellow they platform calls for assassination, they have nothing to say.

When the Founding Fathers talked about different faiths, it’s very clear now they were talking about different denominations of Christianity whether Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist or Lutheran.

Neil's counsel to Christian men never changes: log off, go quiet, cut off the men who agree with you.
Men don't need fewer brothers. They need more of them.
