Are journalistic standards still alive during wartime — or do they need to be rethought? 🤔 War, information pressure, the race for clicks, and the rapid development of AI are changing journalism. But where is the line between adapting to new realities and abandoning professional standards? At the Donbas Media Forum, leading Ukrainian media professionals discussed these challenges in a panel moderated by Nataliia Lygachova, chief editor of Detector Media. 💬 Are journalistic standards still relevant when some information cannot be disclosed for security reasons? Does balance always mean giving both sides a voice? How can journalists protect the public interest without putting people at risk? And what matters more in the age of instant updates: speed or accuracy? The discussion brought together different perspectives — and some sharp disagreements — on what quality journalism should look like today. 🔎 Read the full discussion on our website: en.detector.media/post/journ… #UkraineWar #Journalism #media

📺 Sky News journalists show how Russian forces used the ceasefire to move troops and equipment into Oleshky British broadcaster Sky News has released footage showing Russian occupation forces bringing heavy military equipment and ammunition into the city of #Oleshky under the cover of a ceasefire, reinforcing their positions and rotating troops. Ukraine’s 34th Separate Marine Brigade, which monitors Russian troop movements during the ceasefire in the Oleshky area, gave Sky News correspondent Stuart Ramsay and his team access to its drone control centre. Footage recorded by Ukrainian forces shows #Russian soldiers deploying heavy military equipment, bringing in ammunition, and carrying large bags into houses and buildings with basements. Residents of Oleshky also confirmed to the journalists that the number of Russian troops and military vehicles had increased shortly before the humanitarian operation. According to Dmytro Pulinets, commander of #Ukraine’s 34th Separate Marine Brigade, Russian soldiers had previously been unable even to drive around the city. However, during the ceasefire, their movements were recorded for several days, both day and night. Russian forces restored all their artillery systems and previously lost positions, rotated personnel, brought in additional troops and equipment, expanded their aerial reconnaissance capabilities, and replenished fuel supplies. 🗣️ “The situation is now twofold. On the one hand, this is indeed an important humanitarian mission, because it is crucial to evacuate civilians from Oleshky, and this should have been done earlier. On the other hand, it will create a lot of work for us once the ceasefire ends, the humanitarian convoys leave, and the brigade returns to the realities of combat,” Dmytro Pulinets said. The broadcaster also showed footage of bodies being removed from the hospital morgue in white body bags. According to local residents, these people had been killed rather than died of natural causes. Russian forces had also prevented the burial of those killed. The journalists counted more than 30 bodies in the footage. Azad Safarov, a producer for British broadcaster Sky News, wrote on his Facebook page that the team could not release the report until the people evacuated from Oleshky had reached Ukrainian-controlled territory. “Now we are showing the world how the Russians used the evacuation, the so-called humanitarian corridor, to pursue their military objectives,” he wrote. #RussiaIsATerroristState #UkraineWar

⚠️ Ukraine’s Air Alert App Partially Restored After Hacker Attack #Ukraine’s official Air Alert mobile application has partially resumed operations following a cyberattack on the evening of 1 November. The attack caused users to receive fake notifications about radiation and chemical threats, as well as street fighting in Kyiv. The app’s development team announced on 2 November that push notifications about air raid alerts had been restored. The map also once again displays yellow and red threat levels, indicating drone attacks and combined large-scale drone and missile attacks, respectively. However, the display of specific targets on the map remains temporarily suspended. 🗓️ On the evening of 1 November, users received a series of false notifications, including messages in Russian claiming that a nuclear alert would be declared across Ukraine and referring to #Russia’s Oreshnik missile. Other notifications warned of radiation and chemical hazards and alleged street fighting in Kyiv. Ukraine’s Air Force warned that the application had likely been subjected to hostile interference and stressed that there was no radiation threat. Following the incident, the developers temporarily disabled push notifications and suspended the app’s operation while working to address the security breach. They also urged users not to click on links contained in suspicious notifications. The development team said that the application does not collect, store, or use users’ personal data, meaning the incident poses no threat to their personal information. Additional security measures are being implemented to prevent similar attacks in the future. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service confirmed that the nationwide air raid alert system, including street sirens, continued to operate normally. The Ministry of Digital Transformation also provided alternative ways to receive air raid warnings while the app was unavailable. #RussiaUkraineWar #RussiaIsATerroristState

🇺🇸 US President Donald Trump has been included in Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) list of “press freedom predators” for the first time. RSF published its 2026 Press Freedom Predators List ahead of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, observed on 2 November. The list features a total of 33 individuals and organisations from around the world. “What do they have in common? A hatred of press freedom. Their weapons may differ, but their goals are the same: to silence independent voices and trample on the right to information. Their methods to muzzle the press include assassinations, imprisonments, propaganda and troll armies. This tongue-in-cheek awards list highlights the diversity and brutality of the tactics used to stifle journalism,” RSF said. #Trump was included on the list because of his administration’s policies during his second presidential term. According to RSF, his administration has made a concerted effort to reduce journalism to political propaganda in the United States. Other figures on the list include Russian President Vladimir #Putin and Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, both in the political category. #FreedomOfPress #Media

A humanitarian operation to rescue people in Oleshky, in the Kherson region, has taken place. A ceasefire was established in the Kherson sector, during which roads to Oleshky were cleared of mines and humanitarian aid was delivered. We hope humanitarian access to Oleshky will remain open. Also, people who needed evacuation have been taken out of the city and the surrounding community. As of now, Ukrainian citizens from Oleshky have crossed the Ukrainian border in the Chernihiv region. All of them will receive the assistance they need. It is important that government agencies and all the regional and local authorities involved work effectively and help our people adapt. I thank the American side and U.S. First Lady Melania Trump for their mediation. I am proud of our Defense Forces of Ukraine, who defend our country and honorably ensured the security conditions for this humanitarian operation. I thank Ukraine’s Human Rights Ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, and his team for carrying out this mission. And I thank everyone around the world – every journalist, every political and civic leader, and every concerned person – who helped draw global attention to the situation in Oleshky and the true humanitarian catastrophe in Ukrainian territory temporarily occupied by Russia. When the world pays attention, people are rescued. Further steps toward de-escalation and real progress toward peace are also needed. Glory to Ukraine!

🇺🇦 Ukrainian Delegation Safely Reaches Occupied Oleshky, Lubinets Says A Ukrainian delegation has safely reached the occupied city of #Oleshky in the Kherson region, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets reported on October 30. According to Lubinets, a ceasefire has been in effect for 80 hours and remains ongoing. He said he was currently meeting with local residents to hear about their needs and determine what assistance they require most. The operation is being carried out in line with agreements reached with Russia’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Yana Lantratova, with the assistance and coordination of US First Lady Melania Trump, Lubinets said. “Our main priority is the people who need help. We are doing everything possible to support them and help everyone who needs it,” he wrote. Lubinets said he would share further details later. #RussiaUkraineWar #Ukraine #StopRussianAggression

❗ 45 Ukrainian media workers are in Russian captivity, Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters says Russia is holding 45 Ukrainian journalists and media activists captive, including 34 civilians and 11 military personnel, according to Petro Yatsenko, a representative of #Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War. Of the 45 people, captivity has been confirmed for 33, while seven are considered missing. Only six of those confirmed in captivity have confirmation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), while information about 26 others has been verified through other sources. Contact has been established with one person. The Coordination Headquarters also includes media activists and influencers in its definition of media workers, recognising their role in reporting events, reaching audiences on social media and influencing their communities. Yatsenko said negotiations for the release of prisoners can take months, with outcomes largely depending on #Russia. Journalists and media activists are among the priority groups for return, alongside people who have been held captive the longest, seriously ill or wounded people, women and civilians. 📌 Every media worker held captive must be brought home. Their cases must remain visible, and efforts to secure their release must continue. #RussiaIsATerroristState #UkraineWar

🔴 Pentagon watchdog declines to investigate Starlink disruptions in Ukraine The Pentagon’s inspector general has declined a bipartisan request from nine US senators to investigate recent disruptions affecting Starlink and its military-grade counterpart, Starshield, in #Ukraine, the Associated Press reports. Ukrainian officials had reported connection speed restrictions that complicated efforts to intercept Russian attack drones. However, the #Pentagon watchdog said the US Air Force was better placed to address the lawmakers’ concerns. Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen criticised the decision, noting that the Trump administration and SpaceX had offered conflicting explanations for the disruptions. She called for an independent review to establish accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future. On October 24, Ukraine’s Defence Ministry reported that Starlink and Starshield speeds had been restored to their pre-restriction levels.

🕯️ Ukrainian serviceman Volodymyr Obertas, who served in the communications unit of the 34th Separate Marine Brigade “Borysfen” and filmed drone footage showing the destruction in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, has been killed in Kherson, Suspilne reports. Yevhen Voronetskyi, head of the communications unit of the Borysfen brigade, said that on October 27, Volodymyr Obertas was working in central #Kherson, accompanying a group of journalists who had arrived to film the city during a period of calm. 🚨 Russian attack damages university buildings and dormitories in Kyiv A Russian ballistic missile attack on #Kyiv overnight on October 27 damaged academic buildings and dormitories at the State University of Trade and Economics (SUTE). Five students and university staff members were injured, according to the university. Two second-year students, Roman Balla and Anna Voloshyna, sustained serious injuries near a university dormitory. Balla is scheduled to undergo a second operation in the neurosurgery department. The university’s student council has called for donations to help cover the injured students’ medical treatment. The university’s rector, Anatolii Mazaraki, said some people had been in shelters during the attack, while those outside were injured. He also refuted reports that anyone had been killed at the university. #Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science is in contact with the university’s management to coordinate assistance, while the university assesses the damage. The attack was part of a wider Russian assault on Ukraine overnight on October 26–27. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, #Russia launched 16 ballistic missiles and more than 280 drones that night. Across Kyiv, the strikes killed one person and injured 15 others, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. Photo: Hromadske

🇨🇿 Thousands protest in Prague against plans to change public media funding. Thousands of people gathered in Prague on October 25 to protest the Czech government’s proposed changes to the funding of public broadcasters, Czech Television and Czech Radio. The demonstrators called on Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s government to withdraw the bill, which would abolish broadcasting licence fees paid by households and businesses and replace them with funding from the state budget. ❗ The proposed reform could reduce public broadcasters’ funding by around 15%. Critics warn that the changes could make the outlets more vulnerable to political pressure and undermine their independence. The government, however, says the reform is about funding transparency and denies that it would threaten editorial independence. The protests followed a parliamentary vote that advanced the bill to the next stage of consideration in the early hours of October 24, at 4:36 a.m., with limited time for opposition debate. Employees of Czech Television and Czech Radio have announced a strike for November 3. Another large demonstration is planned in Prague on November 15.

🇺🇸 Trump criticizes Fox News for not doing enough to support Republicans ahead of midterms. US President Donald #Trump has criticized Fox News for giving too much airtime to Democratic candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. In a post on Truth Social on October 25, Trump accused the conservative-leaning network of giving Republicans’ opponents too much exposure while failing to adequately promote GOP candidates. He claimed this was one reason the races were competitive. Trump’s latest criticism comes amid a series of complaints about Fox News’ election coverage. Earlier in October, he also criticized the network for interviewing Democratic candidates and for not broadcasting some of his campaign rallies. Republicans are fighting to retain their majorities in Congress, while Trump has been campaigning across the country to boost support for the party ahead of the vote. #Elections2026 #Republicans #Democrats

📚 Russian strike damages Ukraine’s Book Chamber, putting 15 million archival items at risk. The Ivan Fedorov Book Chamber of Ukraine in Kyiv suffered significant damage during a Russian ballistic missile attack on the night of October 19. The blast wave shattered windows in the archive storage facilities and administrative building, damaged doors and walls, and caused parts of the ceiling to collapse. The institution preserves around **15 million items documenting Ukraine’s publishing history**, including books, newspapers, magazines, and other printed materials. With windows broken and the building exposed to moisture, the collection is now at risk of further damage. The staff urgently need to secure the premises against rain, as damp conditions can irreversibly damage paper archives. Fortunately, no employees were injured. However, this is not the first time the building has suffered damage from Russian attacks: it was also hit in December 2025 and January 2026. The Book Chamber is a vital part of Ukraine’s cultural heritage, preserving the country’s printed history for future generations. #Ukraine #Kyiv #RussianWar #CulturalHeritage #Books #Archives

👩🏻‍💻 OpenAI Report: Disruption of New Russian and Iranian AI-Enabled Operations The Kremlin and Iran are using AI to spread disinformation, but tech companies are working to detect and disrupt these efforts. OpenAI has released a new report exposing covert influence operations that utilized ChatGPT to scale up propaganda efforts. How exactly did malicious actors employ artificial intelligence? 🔷 They generated disinformation posts, social media comments, and "expert" opinion pieces in various languages (including English, French, German, and Spanish). 🔷 They used AI to quickly translate and edit texts for diverse target audiences and even to write code to support their bot networks. 🔷 They established a network of fake independent platforms masquerading as regional think tanks or legitimate media outlets. Ultimately, generative AI did not invent new narratives—Kremlin and Iranian manipulation tactics remained the same. However, artificial intelligence has amplified their capabilities: it allows for the creation of far more disinformation "noise" in less time and at a lower cost. The era of AI-driven propaganda demands a new standard of hygiene from both society and tech giants—ranging from strict oversight of Large Language Model (LLM) usage to the rapid monitoring of algorithmic anomalies. #Disinformation #ArtificialIntelligence #OpenAI #HybridWarfare

🤔 Elections “on demand”: Trump once again calls for a “new leader” for Ukraine In response to a question from journalist Tetiana Kozyrieva about what he would like to say to people in Ukraine who suffer from Russian missile strikes every day and are starving under occupation, US President Donald Trump suggested on October 10 that Ukrainians elect a “new leader” who would be “capable of making a deal” with Russia. 🇺🇦 Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha responded to Donald #Trump’s remarks by saying that the decision on elections rests with the Ukrainian people and that statements from abroad only confirm that the president is doing his job well. Ukrainian President Volodymyr #Zelenskyy, meanwhile, said he was ready for elections if Russia agreed to a “complete ceasefire for 60 days.” According to an analysis by the Detector Media Research Center, Donald Trump’s demands that #Ukraine hold elections resurface several times a year. His statements are among the most prominent catalysts for discussions about holding elections during active hostilities. However, Donald Trump’s calls for elections in Ukraine appear to reflect an emotional reaction rather than a consistent position. They most often accompany or follow demands that Ukraine agree to a particular way of ending hostilities favored by Donald Trump’s inner circle or by #Russia. Read more: en.detector.media/post/elect…

🫡 American journalist Jared Goyette has joined the ranks of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. He announced it on his X page. “I should disclose that I've enlisted in the Ukrainian military. It's a desk job in Kyiv, but it starts with basic training and a probation period. I'm in a group of mostly 20-somethings, all with military experience. I'm 44 and have none, so let's see if I make it. I'm a bit chubby but stubborn,” the journalist wrote. In a comment to Detector Media, @JaredGoyette shared that he had worked for a year at the Ukrainian English-language publication The Kyiv Independent, but resigned in August and was in a transitional period, considering the possibility of returning to freelance work. “I’d already received some offers from publications in the defense technology sector, as well as opportunities to work in radio and television. But after living here for three years, I felt it was the right time to find out if I could use my skills directly in the service. I’m applying for permanent residency in Ukraine, and since I plan to make this country my home, I thought it was the right thing to do to at least try to find out if I’m needed here,” the journalist noted. The journalist has not yet disclosed which unit he will serve in. In addition to his military service, Goyette plans to continue writing about books for the Ukrainian publication Chytomo. #RussiaUkraineWar #UkraineWarNews #StandWithUkraine
