"People often think that benefit levels are related to meeting some level of minimum need, but this is not the case. The last, and only, official assessment of benefits adequacy was undertaken in the 1960s, and it had little effect on subsequent policy." bit.ly/3N5lRTV

4)But single parents do not feel they are provided with tailored support that takes account of the unique combination of challenges facing them. Data from @DistantWelfare project shows single parent benefit recipients report more negative experiences than others on such issues.

We looked at levels of food insecurity among benefit recipients (@DistantWelfare) Majority of working-age who are food insecure are receiving benefits. Half of UC recipients worried food will run out, quarter report hunger because not enough money. distantwelfare.co.uk/food-in…
At the DWP Select Committee, I questioned Theresa Coffey. I was frankly embarrassed and left frustrated by the Minister’s lack of an answer. There was no recognition of the impact of UK Tory welfare policies on food insecurity and challenges with the cost of living.

Excited to see this @ESRC project, developed with Leeds-based researchers, use a comic to share stories about how people experience social security in the pandemic. We've been talking to @LinkingLeeds today about links between financial concerns and mental and physical health.
