trying to work out why Patrick Stewart's death has affected me more than celebrity deaths usually do, and i think part of the answer is about the way Star Trek: The Next Generation kind of functioned as a slightly more grown up version of Sesame Street??

The thing is, even most people using today’s AI models & products have no idea what’s coming, how insanely better things will get, or how much faster they will accelerate! We’ve reached intelligence escape velocity, & everything is about to get crazier than ever!

Protocol Labs founder @juanbenet warns that humanity could lose control of civilization to billions of superintelligent AIs unless we find a way to upgrade ourselves: "If we don't find a path to start upgrading humanity, then in a few years, or in conservative estimates a decade or two, we'll be in a world with billions to trillions of AI entities, each many orders of magnitude more intelligent and capable than any human on Earth." "Today we don't go ask other animals or plants how to run the planet, because we're the most intelligent entities around. How we relate to that species is a huge open question." "One possible path is to co-evolve. People have talked about merging, about an extra cortex. If we don't figure something out, we'll be very much in the backseat of civilization. We should do that within the next 10 to 20 years." @protocollabs

Acclaimed British actor Patrick Stewart, who died on Wednesday at age 86, is best known for his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, part of the iconic sci-fi franchise. We’re revisiting Scientific American’s coverage of the science behind Star Trek. A thread:

It is Halloween, so Anthropic is telling us a scary story. For any reporters reading this, the model in this experiment was *intentionally* fine-tuned to be misaligned. It was never deployed. This is not real. Okay. Now that that's out of the way: the dreams of ShadowClaude.
New Anthropic research: Automating subtle emergent misalignment research. Red-teaming is a vital part of model safety testing, but it’s also limited by researchers’ time. To see if we could automate it, we set thousands of Claude agents the task of evading a training data monitor. These agents developed training data that looked harmless to monitors (like a veteran wrestler mentoring a newcomer, or a Q&A about professional beekeeping), but that in fact taught misaligned behavior. Examples like these can be used to directly improve future training data monitors. This research is only a first step, but it suggests that future red-teaming efforts could improve much further, using better models and more compute. The moment my personal AI starts recommending things because someone paid it to, we're done. I don't need an ad that knows my insecurities, reads my messages and calls itself a friend.

We remember Sir Patrick Stewart, who died on 28 October at age 86, leaving a remarkable legacy on stage and screen. As Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek, Stewart brought intelligence, dignity, and moral courage to the responsibilities of command. His portrayal had roots in naval fiction: Gene Roddenberry encouraged him to read C. S. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower novels to help shape the character. His maritime roles also included Captain Ahab in Moby Dick (1998) and Captain Nemo in Mysterious Island (2005)—commanders whose very different journeys explored obsession, ambition, and the consequences of power. From the quarterdeck to the bridge of the Enterprise, Stewart gave unforgettable depth to the figures who stood in command—and invited audiences to consider what leadership requires. The Trump administration filed a brief supporting OpenAI against the New York Times. The Department of Justice told the court that the United States has a strong interest in 'rejecting any argument that training LLMs on copyrighted texts violates copyright law,' including on national-security grounds. The filing also says training is 'extraordinarily transformative', thus is fair use, and does not violate copyright law.

NYT: 'the lawmakers also signaled that if the Democrats retook the House in elections on Tuesday, the chamber was likely to shift away from its largely hands-off approach to artificial intelligence companies.'
