WRAL featured a patient who became the first person in NC to receive a new gene therapy for #sicklecell disease. The therapy holds promise for some people with the painful blood disorder who meet the qualifications for treatment.

Today is #WorldCancerDay. On this day, I find myself reflecting upon the current state of #cancer care, and marveling at the remarkable advancements of the last decade, while recognizing the unmet needs that persist.
Immune checkpoint inhibitors have revolutionized care and outcomes for so many patients with solid organ tumors. CAR-T cell therapy has transformed the care of so many people with relapsed/refractory #bloodcancers. Molecular profiling of each person's cancer has become the norm, and these results increasingly yield actionable insights; more patients are receiving targeted therapies, often with improved efficacy and less toxicity than conventional treatments. Most of these therapies were nearly unimaginable in 2009 when I began my fellowship training in oncology. Yet here we are! How amazing it is to witness these transformative advances.
Despite these advances, we still have a long way to go towards eradicating cancer. There remain many areas where even our most remarkable tools are woefully inadequate. At @DukeCancer and @DukeHMCT @DukeHealth we will continue to fight this fight, for our patients, their families, and all those we love. As we renew this commitment today, there is great optimism and excitement for transformative advances in the years to come. And we will do so with ongoing commitment to keep the patient, as person, at the center of all that we do.
