It has been six weeks since I revealed in @heraldscotland that 90 programmes at Edinburgh University would close from 2027.
Since then, I've written more than 30 articles about the cuts, the majority being exclusives.

Pretty sure this is as a result of the axing of Good Morning Scotland. The replacement is in no way the sort of serious news programme our democracy needs. Despite the quality of the presenters. I’ve pretty much 💯 migrated to the Today programme.

A new nuclear power station in England has been branded a "terrible deal" for taxpayers. Sizewell C was supposed to cost £20bn. It's now expected to cost between £40.5bn and £47.7bn, with construction finishing between 2039 and 2043.
Ferries anyone?

Exactly as many of us have been saying for a long time
Former BBC Panorama producer @philcraig says the Beeb has been taken over by a “radical generation” and that “all the mistakes” in its Gaza coverage “seem to be in the same direction.”
He points to the al-Ahli hospital blast, when the BBC rushed to blame Israel for what turned out to be a misfired Hamas rocket, and warns this kind of poor journalism has helped fan fires around the world — including literal fires at synagogues.
Gerald and I are proud to call Phil a friend and colleague. Thank you for the clarity and courage in calling out your former employer.

The mission of UK universities? To keep consultants & lawyers in business😉
Goldsmiths has spent £14.6m on consultants & lawyers since 2019
More cuts looming. Financial crisis unresolved. Jobs lost
But there’s always money for consultants & lawyers

Unless all P1 pupils are forced to use the ‘government’ school bag it will become a badge of poverty. Don’t ministers understand real life?

When Alex Salmond was the leader of the SNP & First Minister of Scotland, he understood the huge economic importance of North Sea oil and gas to the prosperity of North East Scotland. He wholeheartedly championed North Sea oil and gas.
The current leader of the SNP and First Minister of Scotland, John Swinney however, has typically shown absolutely no decisiveness, vision or basic intent on North Sea oil and gas. He just floats around it with half-hearted and equivocal indecisiveness.

This. Quite a story.
The King is dismayed by Prince William’s decision to sell off part of the Duchy of Cornwall estate in Devon and so are local people who believe it prioritises urban over rural homelessness and mental health

Really interesting speech by Lord Sales
Last week @lincolnsinn welcomed the Court's Deputy President Lord Sales, as speaker for this year's Sir Thomas More Lecture.
You can read Lord Sales's lecture 'What is the purpose in the purposive interpretation of statutes?' on his biography page on the Court's website:

Dunning was my professor at @Cornell during my PhD.
This paper answers why confident idiots run the world.
Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy.
It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.”
they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception.
And the results are wild.
participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile.
they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence.
the paper revealed a brutal paradox:
the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain.
if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing.
this creates a dangerous systemic loop.
the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions.
meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse.
top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else.
they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add.
we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence.
the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't.
the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.

So apparently reservoirs are running dry.
Water companies have sold 35 reservoirs in the past decade and built precisely zero major reservoirs since 1992. Meanwhile, data centres are slurping millions of litres of water a day - explicitly left out of the national water plans.

This exposes the problem with list MSPs who are accountable to no-one but their party. Kate Nevens (Green MSP) uses public money to hire a migrant justice officer - immigration is a reserved issue. Surely a deeply cynical use of public money for purely political purposes. (Free to read)

As I predicted, Reform couldn't professionalise, peaked too soon, and once it's polling 3rd for long enough, a lot of Conservative-Reform switchers are going to want to come back and back the stronger horse, leading to a death spiral for Reform.

This looks like abuse of public funds.

We need more of this in Britain. Reboot civic pride and cobble the streets. Cobbled streets provide exceptional longevity (a properly installed cobblestone street can last for hundreds of years), natural water management, built-in speed reductions and a timeless aesthetic value.
Replying to @JamesMelville
Credit where credit is due. Durham county council re cobbled this street and it looks brilliant
