For all those who can speak German (I don’t know if there is an English translation available already) I suggest the new book by Robert Habeck. He analyzed the interests of different countries concerning the Arctic. Very informative. You will understand everybody’s actions much better. And you will understand that many of those ambitions are more old mens fantasies of greatness than of actual to them, for the resources of the Arctic are much more expensive to exploit than the same materials can be get elsewhere. And climate change won’t change that at all. On the contrary. With melting ice comes wet and soft soil that is hard to drive on. And the most important thing: If climate change gets worse there will be more green in Greenland but at the same time trade chains and nations all over the world will collapse. Even if you might get to the resources at 3 or 4 °C global warming, at the same time you will lose global interest in those resources. If people are starving and killing each other for food, getting some material you can’t eat just isn’t the main interest. In this book Habeck also writes about Peter Thiel‘s idea to build a new society of genetically optimized super humans in Greenland and the Arctic. Stupid as this might sound, some billionaires take that idea very serious. They want to use climate change to kill normal humans and to install their offspring as a new class of global rulers. (There are several interviews with Peter Thiel and others in which they share the idea, even the part with using climate change to reduce mankind. They are easy to find.) And again: If Thiel speaks of killing humans until there are as few left as about 2000 years ago, Thiel misses one important point: That would need a global warming that would tip all tipping points and if they alle tip there is no option to end global warming. Then the system of the earth will collapse in a way that there won’t be 2 billion humans left and all the cities and natural beauties are still there. If global warming becomes unstoppable, which might be the case in a few years from now, then there will be such drastic changes in weather, that neither humans nor nature and not even cities and buildings will survive. Than everything will be gone. (Maybe some people left but all money and gold would lose its worth totally.)
