Last night September 21, Nigerian Christian communities south of Jos, the capital of Plateau State, suffered yet another night of terror as armed attackers rampaged across multiple villages, killing at least four civilians despite a curfew imposed by the state government. Survivors identified the killers as Fulani ethnic militia. The latest killings bring the death toll to over 30 people in targeted attacks across Plateau State in the past week alone, including a pastor killed on his way to church last Sunday. The assaults stretched from Kafi Abu, Rakok, Razat and Bet in Ropp District of Barkin Ladi LGA, to Panyam in Mangu LGA and Kangyer in Mushere District of Bokkos LGA. In large numbers, the attackers attempted to replicate the coordinated massacres previously witnessed in June 2012, April-May 2014, June 2018, August 2021, May 2023, December 2023, January-April 2024, and April-June 2025, when dozens of Christian villages were simultaneously overrun, leaving hundreds dead in single nights. We acknowledge the swift intervention of law enforcement. Even so, at least four people were confirmed killed — two in Kafi Abu, Ropp District, Barkin Ladi LGA, and two in Kangyer village, Mushere Central District, Bokkos LGA. In Panyam, a prominent businessman was kidnapped, in what appears to be a deliberate attempt to intimidate and impoverish local residents to gain easier access to the area. We currently have reports that the attackers are still massing in the hills around Ropp and Gashish districts, planning further assaults on Christian communities. Officials have assured the public that they are working to protect citizens. Residents must, however, remain vigilant and do everything necessary to protect their right to life. Avoid isolated routes, farms, mining sites, and late-night movements. And crucially, do everything permitted by law to defend yourself when confronted. The 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides for the use of "proportionate force" in self-defence. I do not see the law contradicting itself — except where there are compromises on the part of security agencies and the judiciary.
