🇪🇺EU reaction to the announcement of imminent US sanctions on the @IntlCrimCourt. 🧵
International justice must be defended. There cannot be lasting peace without accountability. The EU deeply regrets the decision of the United States to impose institutional sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC). We will carefully analyse the situation and take the appropriate steps to protect the Court. The US decision to delay the entry into force of its latest measures is an opportunity for dialogue. The EU will continue to support the ICC and the Rome Statute system through political, diplomatic, financial and practical means. @IntlCrimCourt

We have a responsibility to uphold international law. The EU is fully committed to the independence of international justice. We urge the United States to use the coming months to engage in dialogue. We will continue support the ICC and to protect its members and staff.

The ICC is the cornerstone of the international criminal justice system. It prosecutes individuals responsible for the most serious crimes under international law. I have spoken with ICC President Tomoko Akane following the United States’ announced intention to impose sanctions. The six-month period before the measures take effect offers a window for dialogue. The EU has always supported the Court, and the EU has options to ensure that it can continue its vital work. Protecting the ICC remains an EU priority.

Congratulations to Navi Pillay in recognition for her lifelong commitment to advance human rights for all! Human rights & the rule of law are foundations of lasting peace. The 🇪🇺EU remains steadfast in its support for @UNHumanRights & the noble fight for equality & justice.
2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navi Pillay’s commitment to universal legal principles and her firm moral compass are constants in a long career. Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid in Durban, South Africa, Pillay became a lawyer and legal pioneer, confronting deep structural discrimination, segregation and exclusion. A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time. This year’s laureate has significantly enlarged the scope and impact of international law. She has served as a judge on the High Court in South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and, until recently, she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Today Navi Pillay is a judge on the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide. In historic international court cases, she has shown that legal measures can help prevent acts of war and violence. Navi Pillay has also contributed to strengthen the institutions of international law. Her independence, expertise and steadfastness have made her one of the most respected international jurists of our time. On a more personal note, it was an honor to work closely with Navi Pillay as the 🇪🇺EU’s Special Representative for Human Rights, when she was 🇺🇳UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Her principled work, wisdom, and deep humanity have made a big positive difference in the world.

Today, science became a target for Russia. My heart goes out to the heroes searching for people trapped inside Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences. As well as to the families and loved ones of the victims of horrific attacks across the country. We stand with them. And with all Ukrainians. Europe is working harder than ever to strengthen Ukraine’s defence.
A Russian strike against the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. A rescue operation is underway: crews are putting out the fire and searching for people who may have been trapped inside. All services are deployed. Today in Kyiv, a pharmaceutical company and gas stations were also attacked; in Dnipro, a business center; and in other cities and regions, civilian facilities, businesses, and communications infrastructure were targeted as well. Sadly, people have been killed… My condolences to their families and loved ones. Russia will definitely face a response to this. And every one of Ukraine’s partners must see from this terror, from these strikes, that supporting Ukraine means truly supporting people’s lives – supporting the principle that terror must never be normalized, anywhere. Russia must be held accountable for all of this and face real consequences. I thank everyone who helps Ukraine!

51 countries are united today in our support for Ukraine at the UN General Assembly. Since March 2025, Ukraine has agreed to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire. We call on Russia to finally do the same. Ukraine wants peace. We want peace. Russia must stop its aggression, accept a ceasefire, and engage meaningfully in negotiations towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with international law.

Development needs are increasing. Yet the funds available to meet them are shrinking. It means that we need to use public funds more smartly and more effectively. In New York, we launched the Global Green Bond Initiative to do exactly that.

IHL only matters if help reaches people. When lives are at stake, we talk to those who can open doors & lift barriers. In DRC. In Lebanon. Everywhere humanitarian diplomacy can still shine a ray of light. The only IHL-focused event at UNGA is where this conversation continues.

Good discussion with @tim_cook in the margins of UNGA. We discussed the EU Kids Act, and agreed on the importance of privacy, safety and security for children. Tech companies innovate and bring huge benefits to our society. They must do so in a way that empowers parents and provides robust protections for young users.
