I welcome the Sakharov Prize awarded to the International Criminal Court.
For victims of the world's gravest crimes, justice means a voice.
The @IntlCrimCourt must be free to pursue its mission, independently, and without pressure or intimidation.
Europe stands firmly behind President Tomoko Akane, the Court's judges and officials, and their vital work for a world governed by rules.

Important conversation on AI with @BillGates and digital CEOs.
We have to strike the right balance.
Between the huge potential AI holds for our industry, healthcare, innovation and so much more.
And its regulation, ensuring trustworthiness and our cyber security.
This is why Europe has the AI Act - for innovation under human control.
And we will continue our global engagement on better coordination and common standards.
To manage the rapid development of AI in the interest of humanity.

On energy.
Households and industry are paying the price for a war far beyond our borders.
On the short-term, we are acting at global and EU level.
Releasing oil reserves, extending our temporary State aid, postponing methane rules by 1 year, supporting refineries and pooling energy demand.
The mid-term answer is clear: replacing imported fossil fuels with electricity made in Europe.

A competitive Europe needs social fairness.
With quality jobs, decent livelihoods and thriving businesses.
To get there, our priorities are clear:
Affordable energy.
A strong Single Market protecting workers’ rights.
And a long-term EU budget that preserves Europe’s social DNA.
Our dialogue with social partners remains essential to deliver on this.

Our European Centre for Democratic Resilience brings together EU Member States.
So they can strengthen their democracies.
The resilience of their societies.
And so they counter foreign interference.
As of today, candidate countries can also join this work.
We can learn from one another. We can become stronger together.

In just two days, Russia’s rampage of violence has killed 78 people and wounded 215.
Buses attacked. Innocent civilians targeted as they go about their daily lives. Never to return home.
Pure and simple - these are war crimes.
Our thoughts are with the brave people of Ukraine.
Europe stands firmly by your side.
With more drones, missiles and air defence systems to protect your skies.
With budget support to keep your country running. And help to repair your energy infrastructure and keep you warm through winter.
Україно, ми з тобою.
Doctors are now fighting to save the lives of people injured in the Russian strike on Kramatorsk. As of now, 30 people have been confirmed killed, and sadly, that number may rise. The Russian bomb effectively hit two city minibuses. Some of those killed have still not been identified because of the severity of their injuries. My condolences to all their families and loved ones. Another 18 people were injured in the strike. Residential buildings and cars were also damaged.
This strike will not go unanswered. Russia is trying to destroy all life in Donbas, and a response from the world is a must. A forceful response – exactly as the Russians deserve for all the deaths they have brought. May all those killed rest in peace.

Congratulations to lawyer and human rights activist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on her Nobel Peace Prize.
Few have devoted their lives to justice, peace and human dignity like she did.
From the violence of apartheid in South Africa to the horrors of the Rwandan genocide, she has confronted some of humanity’s darkest chapters.
She has looked the brutality of injustice in the eye and never looked away.
She is the defender of the persecuted, the vulnerable, the voiceless and the excluded.
Of the rule of law over the right of might.
In a world that needs justice more than ever, her courage and moral clarity are a precious compass.

20 years ago, Anna Politkovskaya was murdered for speaking truth to power in Putin’s Russia.
She exposed the brutality of war. She gave a voice to its victims. And she refused to be intimidated into silence.
This cost her life. But her memory is carried by so many to this day.
Press freedom in Russia has now only been crushed further. But Anna’s voice continues to travel far beyond Russia’s borders.
She remains a symbol of courage, of fearless journalism and of the power of truth in the face of oppression.
Today, we honour Anna’s legacy. And we think of all those who continue the work she gave her life for.

We honour the victims and stand with the families who still carry the heavy weight of grief.
We remember the young lives cut short at a music festival. And the long ordeal of the hostages.
The EU stands with all those whose lives were forever changed by that day.
The unspeakable savagery and terror of 7 October must never happen again.
The EU remains ready to help turn today’s fragile ceasefire into a durable peace, based on a two-state solution.
And remains equally convinced that nothing justifies terror.

The situation in the Black Sea is increasingly concerning.
Commercial ships – and innocent crews – are being targeted, with lives already lost at sea.
Today, two commercial vessels were hit in Bulgaria’s economic zone in Black Sea.
This comes just one day after a Turkish ship carrying Ukrainian grain was struck and sunk off the Romanian coast.
While exact circumstances of these incidents are still being established, the developments are very concerning.
Attacks on civilian shipping are unacceptable.
