What’s Yr Take on Cassavetes
What a weird post. If you've never heard about Cassavetes, it's because you don't know much about movies. Which is fine, but it's strange to act like it's some mystery.

Economist Tyler Cowen with a good point about "Who's On First." The supposed names of the players are not realistic names. Abbott could explain that this team has unusual names, but, for no rational reason, he does not. Read the full analysis at Tyler's website, Autism Daily.

Literally everyone said that
As an older millennial that was a teenager for these movies, I do not remember anybody saying the prequels sucked at the time. That was social media revisionism by nerdy edgelords on social media 10 years later. Episode I is a masterpiece (and Empire is still my favorite)

Democrats should be on high alert about any *hints* of class snobbery. a) It's a bad thing in itself--a violation of social equality; b) it's electoral poison because it pisses people off; c) it's electoral poison because it reinforces an inherently limited cocoon of support.
I mean, Trump's Oval Office looks ridiculous, embarrassing. There must be 100 ways Obama could have made this point, in a funny way, without seeming to sneer a restaurant chain popular with the non elite. His speechwriters couldn't help it.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Walter Koenig’s passing. Although we did not know each other well away from the set, we shared the later seasons of the original Star Trek series and the six films that followed. What I observed, and what so many fans have expressed over the years, was a man who genuinely loved the Star Trek community. At conventions, Walter was rarely content to remain behind a signing table. He preferred to be among the people who had kept Star Trek alive for so many decades. That kind of genuine connection is rare, and it will be remembered by everyone who came into contact with him. My condolences to his family, his friends, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.

William Shatner was the third oldest cast member, behind only Kelley and Doohan (and of course just four days older than Nimoy). Takei is the youngest, even though Koenig was cast in season 2 as the new young thing.
RIP. Only Kirk and Sulu are left

It was well-reported but nothing "must read" about it and lord knows all the YASS QUEEN bullshit about this story is silly.
Must read from SF Chronicle on the war on accelerated math in Palo Alto and how it's playing out in school board race. Brian Conrad spot-on again. archive.ph/S2bqp#selection-1…

Anyone who says “everyone can learn everything” should be forced to learn quantum theory and then teach it a random selection of people until they can pass a test on it with no errors.

It’s not that people are all the same, it’s that with enough time and resources everyone can learn everything. Thats what makes us human, the ability to learn. Yes, some people learn things faster but anything (cognitive) achieved by one human being is achievable by another

It's funny, Koenig was brought on as the "young new recruit" but he's older than Takei.
Walter Koenig has passed away. Everyone got to show their comedy chops in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and Chekov asking for directions to the "Nuclear Wessels" and the interrogation scene are real highlights. Koenig often cited The Voyage Home as his favourite Trek film.

This is decent if you are teaching k-3 and not good enough to need really stupid rules.
Pupil behaviour is essential. The tiny things teachers do to make sure behaviour is good are so important to get right. Here are 10 things I’m currently thinking about and using in all of my lessons. 🧵

This is the 1st graph of a news story? "Over the last five years, law enforcement officers have tackled, struck, grabbed, pepper-sprayed and handcuffed Omaha-area students on school property, according to records reviewed by the Flatwater Free Press." What does it mean?

Look, inquiry/discovery, the good kind, is really really hard. Standard unbranded di is fine.
Does direct instruction work? Some claimed Stockard et al. (2018) meta-analysis didn't compare DI to inquiry-based teaching for math. We reanalyzed the data. DI was significantly MORE effective than inquiry-based (d = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.49 to 0.70). @CECMembership @NCTM @ehanford

I don't believe that anyone is actually "taller" than anyone else. I think that anyone can get their legs extended.
I don’t believe that anyone is actually “smarter” than anyone else. I think that everything on an IQ test is a skill that can be honed.

There's a kind of math teaching that is so obsessed with procedures, it basically turns into discovery learning but for concepts: "You'll figure out the concepts on your own later when you have the procedures by heart."
