A certificate of analysis answers four questions about a vial that a label cannot: what is in it, how pure it is, how much is in it, and what else is in it. Here is how to read one, using two of our own released lots: Purity and identity are two different tests. Purity says how much of what is in the vial is one compound. Identity says which compound that is. A certificate can show one without the other, and a high purity figure means nothing if the identity test was never run. Our BPC-157 lot 030284, tested by ILS Laboratories in San Diego, reports purity of 99.72% by reversed-phase HPLC at 214 nm, against the laboratory's own specification of at least 95.0%. The same certificate reports identity separately: HPLC retention time compared with a reference standard, result "Confirmed". Our SS-31 lot 060722, tested by BT Labs in West Palm Beach, reports 99.6% by HPLC at 280 nm against a 98% specification, and confirms identity by a different method, FTIR under USP <197A>. Two laboratories, two identity methods, both named on the certificate. When a certificate says only "99% pure" and names no identity method, it has answered half the question. "Report Only": the number with no pass or fail. A 10 mg label and a certificate that reads 10.7 mg are not a contradiction. Net peptide content is reported against a "Report Only" specification on the ILS certificate: the laboratory weighs and assays the sample and prints what it found, and sets no acceptance range. That is why our BPC-157 page states 10.7 mg next to the 10 mg label and does not say "meets specification". There is no specification to meet. A figure above the label is as ordinary as one below it, and a certificate that prints 10.0 mg exactly would be the surprising one. The BT Labs certificate takes the other approach. For SS-31 it prints assayed content of 10.4 mg, 104.5% of the 10 mg label, against a stated window of 90 to 110%. Same measurement, two reporting conventions. The certificate tells you which one applies; read that line before reading the number. Endotoxin and sterility: separate panels, sometimes separate certificates Purity and identity describe the peptide. Endotoxin and sterility describe everything else in the vial, and a purity certificate alone says nothing about either. The BT Labs purity certificate says so in its own words: it does not cover particulate matter, microbial contamination or endotoxins. On the ILS certificate for BPC-157 030284, all four results sit on one document: endotoxin by USP <85> at 0.101 EU/mL, and sterility by PCR with no growth. On the BT Labs lot, the laboratory issued three documents for one batch: the purity and identity certificate (COA261149-004), a sterility report (COA261149-011) and a bacterial endotoxins report (COA261149-018). A vendor who shows you only the first of those three has shown you one third of the panel. The practical check is simple. Count the tests the certificate names, and count the certificates. If the page says "fully tested" and the certificate names two tests, the page is doing the work the certificate did not. How to verify a certificate with the laboratory yourself: A PDF can be edited. The check that cannot be faked is the laboratory's own record. Every ILS certificate we publish prints a verification path and an access code; entering them at portal.ils-lab.com returns the laboratory's copy of that certificate, issued by them, not by us. The BPC-157 030284 page carries that link and code. BT Labs works differently: each report carries its own number, and the laboratory confirms a report on request with a name and a quick check. Our lot pages link each BT Labs report by number so the request is a copy-paste, not a search. What verification confirms is that the document is genuine and that the batch it names was tested as stated. It confirms the certificate, not an individual vial. That limit is printed on our pages because it is true of every certificate from every lab.
