❌ The UK Government is being urged to follow the EU and Norway by banning Brazilian beef and poultry over concerns about antibiotic use. The NFU has warned that failing to act could see Brazilian meat diverted into Great Britain, putting further pressure on British farmers while undermining public confidence in food safety. 🇧🇷 READ MORE: ow.ly/uMSf50ZCpWb

The Uberisation of water must be stopped. Profiting from scarcity in an essential of life is bad enough. But these companies helped create the scarcity. 🚰 No major reservoir built since privatisation 💧 2.9 billion litres leaked every day 🏗️ Just one operational desalination plant For 35+ years, they’ve sweated the assets instead of investing in them. Now they want us to pay even more for their failures. Water is a common good, not a commodity. Bring it back into public ownership.

Jeremy Clarkson has been refused permission to sell food he grew himself, twice. In the same window, central government overruled a Lincolnshire council to put solar panels across 1,214 hectares of grazing land, an area the size of Heathrow. Run the two columns side by side, because the pattern is the whole story. He asked to open a restaurant in his own lambing shed. Refused. He asked for a car park for the people already blocking the lane. Refused. He asked to sell food produced more than sixteen miles away. Capped at sixteen. He asked for a barn to store his own harvest, so he would not have to sell at whatever price August offered. Full application required. He asked about the restaurant again. Enforcement notice, and six weeks judged ample to put the building back as it was. Now the other column. Had he covered those same fields in solar panels, the council could have refused and been overruled from Whitehall, as Lincolnshire was in October 2025. Had he grown maize to feed an anaerobic digester, nobody would have written to anybody. Had he taken £532 a hectare from Defra to grow a legume fallow, he would have been paid to leave a crop standing that may not be harvested, grazed or sold. Defra cut that rate this year and gave the reason in writing: it had become attractive enough to take land out of food production. Had he sold the lot to a data centre, a battery park or a Chinese pig unit, all four of which he listed in his column last week, the paperwork would have moved considerably faster than a farm shop's. There is your planning system. Every use of English farmland is easier to permit than farming. Two hundred of his acres grew nothing at all this year, and the queue of people who want that ground for something other than food is already forming. He is not being stopped from developing the countryside. He is being stopped from feeding it.

Setting a final closure date of 30th June for the ‘overseas sheep shearer visa’ just shows how out of touch this Labour government is with British agriculture. For years, entry has been granted to approximately 50 to 75 skilled overseas sheep shearers from Australia and New Zealand who have arrived each season to help shear millions of our sheep during our peak summer months. When this year’s visas expire, that’s it. The government have close the door. And let’s remember, the government only granted this year’s visas due to sustained pressure by the sheep sector and the Conservatives. The Home Office state the livestock sector must transition fully to domestic labour. But expecting the industry to magically replace this specialised global workforce overnight while ignoring the severe risks of fly strike, heat stress, and general animal welfare is reckless. Farms don't need arbitrary bureaucratic deadlines; they need practical support. This government must stop pulling the rug out from under our livestock farmers, get a grip and realise that not enabling this relationship to continue is hugely detrimental for animal welfare and our sheep industry.
The last overseas shearers Britain intends to let in are on the fells right now, working out the final weeks of their leave. The door shut on 30 June. No vote, no debate, no announcement, just a date passing quietly in a summer when everyone was looking elsewhere. Those still working the Borders this week are here on leave that expires on 1 October, and when they fly out that is the end of it. Understand what is walking out. Six New Zealanders spent three months in one Northumberland valley last year and sheared nearly 90,000 sheep. Fifteen thousand head each, across farms from the Scottish Borders down to County Durham. They have been coming into Coquetdale for over thirty years. Since 2011 a concession has let up to 75 of them in each spring, and between them they take the wool off one and a half to two million British sheep in a window a few weeks long. The Home Office rejected the application on 2 February. Twenty-six days of farmers writing to their MPs got it reinstated on 10 March for one final year, with a line about the sector having had fourteen years to train British workers and now being expected to transition to domestic labour. Here is what that sentence is standing on. British Wool trains over 800 people a year, most of those courses are basic level, and most of the people on them are sheep farmers learning to do their own flock. Training was never the bottleneck. A top shearer clears a ewe in two or three minutes, calm hands, no panic in the animal, hundreds a day for weeks on end, and reaching that standard takes years of conditioning and a place in a global trade that follows the season around the planet. Fourteen million breeding ewes. A few weeks to do them all. A sheep left in fleece gets eaten alive by maggots, so the job is not optional and the date is not negotiable. Next spring those farms make phone calls that nobody answers. Seventy-five shearers, once a year, and a government that could not find room for them.

We must not forget the people of Lebanon. 4,000 people killed since March. 1.2 million forced from their homes. Their humanity deserves more than deafening silence. Israel must be held accountable for its war crimes, alongside all those who have been shamefully complicit.

By David Abbruzzes: This Australian's reply to Trump's rant about “NATO not being there for America” is perfect. "Mate. You run a country with 600,000 homeless people sleeping on the street tonight. A country where 40% of adults can't cover a $400 emergency without borrowing money. A country where insulin costs more than a car payment and people are rationing it to survive. A country where medical debt is the number 1 cause of bankruptcy. A country where women are dying in hospital car parks because doctors are too scared of abortion laws to treat a miscarriage. You lock up more of your own citizens than any nation on earth. More than China. More than Russia. More than North Korea. The land of the free has 2 million people in cages, and a quarter of them haven't even been convicted of anything. They're just too poor to make bail. Your life expectancy is going backwards. You're the only developed nation where that's happening. Your infant mortality rate is worse than Cuba's. Your kids do active shooter drills between maths and English while you sell the gunmaker's stock to your mates. Your minimum wage hasn't moved in 15 years. You've got teachers working 2 jobs and veterans sleeping under bridges and you just spent a trillion dollars flattening a country that didn't attack you. And you’ve got a convicted felon, adjudicating raping, paedophile protecting, porn star shagging insurrectionist running the biggest dumpster fire war campaign since the Taliban thanked you very much for losing again. And you're calling Greenland poorly run? Greenland has universal healthcare. Free education. One of the lowest incarceration rates in the world. Nobody goes bankrupt there because they got sick. Nobody dies in a waiting room because their insurance said no. 'NATO wasn't there when we needed them." When exactly was that, champ? September 11? Because NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in history FOR YOU. Soldiers from dozens of countries deployed, fought, bled, and died in Afghanistan FOR YOU. Australia wasn't even in NATO and we still showed up. For 20 years. And you pulled out at 2am without telling anyone and left them to deal with the mess. So maybe before you start calling other countries poorly run, have a look at your own backyard, you spray-tanned aluminium siding salesman. The only thing poorly run in this picture is your f----- mouth." Very well stated.

Britain is more than 100% self-sufficient in lamb. We grow more than we eat and export the surplus. Sit with that, because it is rare. Roughly 85% self-sufficient in beef. Effectively 100% in milk. Around 90% in eggs. The animal food on a British plate was almost certainly born and raised here, a great deal of it on upland pasture that can grow nothing else: no wheat, no veg, just grass and the animals that turn it into food. Field to plate, the journey runs to tens of miles. Now look at the half of the trolley you were told was the virtuous one. January strawberries from Egypt. Peppers from Spain and Morocco. Winter leaves from Israel. Green beans from Kenya. Blueberries from Peru. The beans and the berries come by air, which is roughly fifty times more carbon-heavy per kilo than the same load sent by sea, to sit in a plastic shell beside a little flag and the word "fresh." Britain feeds itself in meat, milk and eggs off its own ground. It is the salad and the soft fruit that have to be flown in from the far side of the world. Worth remembering which half of that plate you were taught to apologise for.
