October 21, 1969, represents a pivotal & dark moment in Somalia’s history, where democracy was supplanted by dictatorship. On that October morning, Siad Barre in his coup d’état dramatically altered Somalia’s course beginning with the detention of prominent political figures followed by the suspension of the Constitution & the closure of the National Assembly. In the upheaval, all political parties were banned & the supreme courts were abolished, marking a decisive break from the established order. Barre’s usurpation of power dismantled the emerging democracy, replacing it with a regime characterized by oppression and the breakdown of the rule of law. His ruthless dictatorship not only crushed civil freedoms but also set Somalia on a disastrous path toward state collapse, leaving a legacy of turmoil, humiliation, and suffering.
The morning Democracy was usurp in 🇸🇴 “The army moved early on #October21, 1969, to seize control of the government, the radio, transport centers.., The Supreme Revolutionary Council proclaimed state of emergency, dissolved the National Assembly, and suspended the Constitution.”

We need to know more about why the U.S. military trained this guy just before and just after he committed war crimes in Somalia.
Please read this story of a Somali colonel who worked for Barre’s regime like Ilhan Omar’s father, and tell me if you think something is insanely wrong about this whole affair: Yusuf Abdi Ali, aka Colonel Tukeh was brought to the U.S. for training in 1986 and 1990. He was in the U.S. receiving Air Force training at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi when Barre’s regime fell, after which he sought asylum in Canada. A 1992 CBC documentary exposed the allegations against him, and Canada deported him in 1992 for serious human rights abuses. He then entered the U.S., but the U.S. began deportation proceedings, so he voluntarily left the country in 1994. In December 1996 he re-entered the U.S. on a visa based on his marriage to a Somali woman who had become a U.S. citizen. The Immigration and Naturalization Service arrested him in the Virginia suburbs in 1998, accusing him of lying on asylum and permanent-residency applications by denying participation in genocidal acts. Officials said evidence indicated he had been directly involved in incidents that led to the deaths of thousands. He ultimately obtained permanent residency and remained in the U.S. but no details are available on why he was allowed to remain. The Center for Justice and Accountability filed a civil suit against him in 2004 and it was litigated in EDVA. He lived openly in the Alexandria area, worked as a security guard at Dulles Airport, and later drove for Uber/Lyft. In 2006 his wife, Intisar Khalif Farah, was convicted of lying on her naturalization forms claiming she was from the Isaaq clan, the same clan her husband was accused of committing war crimes against. She served only a month in prison and remains in the U.S. today, as far as records show. In May 2019, after much delay, the 2004 case ended when a federal jury in Alexandria, Virginia, found Ali liable for torture under the Torture Victim Protection Act. The jury awarded the torture victim $500,000, which was never paid. In 2020 the Human Rights Violations and War Crimes Center formally requested that HSI Washington, D.C., open an investigation. Arrest followed in November 2022; an immigration judge ordered removal in February 2024; deportation occurred in December 2024. Why did Biden and Mayorkas finally deport this criminal right after Trump won in 2024???

Here’s a March 2019 CNN report that got Yusuf Abdi Ali, the war criminal from Somalia who served under Barre’s regime like Ilhan Omar’s father, fired from Uber and Lyft. Thanks for the link @magannews.

@ImMeme0

Somaliland was the Northern British protectorate that joined with the Southern Italian Somaliland after they both gained independence in 1960 to form the Somali Republic. It also shows Aden, the city in Yemen taken by British forces in 1839 secure a coaling station and naval base for ships traveling to India. The area that was British Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 after the fall of the Barre regime. It calls itself Somaliland, but the UN hasn’t recognized it and considers it an autonomous region of Somalia.

The problem with Somaliland is the walking dead from Ceel Afweyn have the audacity to criticise and focus on other cities when their own homes and cities are dumpsters. If everyone focused on fixing where they were from, Somaliland would be a far better country.

Political gatherings may produce headlines, but no such gathering can manufacture a veto over Somaliland’s future, erase its history, sovereignty, or the legitimate aspirations of its people. Using the failed Mogadishu administration as a proxy against Somaliland will never work.
