I WISH someone had explained this to me when I was younger Christian.
Every commandment in the Bible and everything it calls a *sin* is actually a *warning* from God not to hurt yourself.
In other words, as it has been said before… When God says DON’T, what He's really saying is: DON’T hurt yourself.
Let me give you several examples.
Sex before marriage - It is a scientific fact that sex creates a neurochemical bond with another person, not just physically but emotionally.
In other words, sex is not just the union of two bodies, but of two souls. So when God says DON’T, he’s saying: you don’t want to be bonded like that to somebody you barely know.
Lying - When you lie, you eventually destroy the trust other people have in you. And the problem with lying is that one lie often requires another to cover it up, until eventually, you've built an entire life around pretending to be someone you're not.
Envy - Envy is resenting God’s goodness in someone else’s life while ignoring God’s goodness in your life. Instead of living a life of gratitude and joy, you live one of bitterness and anger.
Pride - Pride makes a person care more about BEING right… than making a relationship RIGHT. And you become incapable of learning, apologizing, or growing.
Gossip - Gossip destroys relationships… and if someone is gossiping TO YOU about other people, chances are they're also gossiping ABOUT YOU to other people behind your back.
Unforgiveness - This one is tough because you’re already hurt with something. But when you refuse to forgive, unforgiveness makes YOU a prisoner of your past, and a slave to bitterness, resentment, and pain. God says “don’t.”
Greed - Greed makes you believe a lie that if you only had “more” then you’d be happy. Not true. You’ll be miserable.
Lust - We live a culture saturated with lust. It always destroys your ability to experience true intimacy with another person. This is why our culture is terrible at marriage, intimacy, and relationships.
Here’s the point.
Deuteronomy 10:12 (NIV) says “Observe the LORD's commands and decrees that I am giving you today … for your own good."
When God forbids something, it’s not because he hates you and he’s trying to rob something from you.
It’s because he loves you and he’s trying to protect you.
When He says DON’T, He's not trying to keep you from enjoying life.
He's teaching you how to truly live it.

Once upon a time, Billy Graham got a speeding ticket.
He showed up to court and experienced the most unexpected lesson that mirrors the gospel.
(Shout out to my friend Pastor @Ed_Newton who I heard this illustration from last week!)
Democrat James Talarico celebrated his victory over Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in Texas’ Senate race, becoming the first Democrat elected to represent the state in the US Senate in 38 years. In his victory speech, he compared his win to the biblical story of David vs. Goliath.

The beauty of the American democratic process is seeing how hard everyone is trying to convince voters even with lies. Nobody is giving them bags of rice, bottles of oil, or loaves of bread. No cash payouts. No thuggery or AI manipulation of voter records. Just talk and ideas.

On today’s episode of sunday uncomfortable conversation, I want to ask a question many people may find difficult to answer: Why Do We Celebrate People More When They Die Than When They Are Alive? Why do we wait until people are gone before acknowledging their contributions, sacrifices and impact? Someone can spend years supporting others, making a difference and adding value to people’s lives, yet receive little recognition. But the moment they die, everyone suddenly remembers how exceptional they were. Are we genuinely appreciating people, or have we become too comfortable taking their presence for granted? Why do we wait until funerals to say the beautiful things we could have said when they were alive? Do we truly appreciate people, or do we only realise their value when we lose them?
Give people their flowers while they are alive.

American High School English Teacher reads real responses from her student’s assignment after reading The Great Gatsby
We have a serious education issue in America and if we don’t address it, we have a horrible future ahead of us
These kind of responses are to be expected because 12th grade reading results in 2024 in America showed that reading levels right now the lowest they’ve ever been since the assessment began in 1992

I don't know why I have to explain this exact thing to people over and over again. In order to have the same buying power now as in the 1970s, you would need to make $40/hour. That is the living wage, $40/hr.

Unpopular opinion: Everybody wants a successful partner until they realize successful people have schedules, boundaries, priorities, and a life that doesn’t revolve around them.

Keep honoring God, being your best, and God will cause the people you need to be for you. He’ll take care of your critics. Just like He closed the mouths of hungry lions, God will close the mouths of those trying to discredit you. That’s not your battle. That battle is the Lord’s.
