.@RebeccaDNELP, @pelhamprog, and @ExtendPua joined us to discuss the transformative impact of pandemic unemployment programs, which helped millions of workers pay their bills in 2020 and 2021. (And why we need to #MakeUISexyAgain so we can #FixUI!) podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas… (4/)

the same politicians who say "people can't afford to miss work because of the pandemic" are also not interested in making sure those workers can afford to miss work

This is not the flex the White House is pretending it is. Millions of Americans are no longer ELIGIBLE to file for unemployment because of expired pandemic programs and maxed out weeks. Businesses are closing again & there's zero safety net for workers.

Yike! If you lost work and March 2020 and went back to work on July 2021, you would be ineligible for state #UI if you lost work and filed in the 4th quarter of 2021 due to Omicron closures #Unemployment
If you collected unemployment benefits earlier in the pandemic and have lost work due to Omicron, your current eligibility for UI may depend on how much you worked in between lapses.

We're heading into this winter Omicron wave without expanded unemployment benefits or any guarantee of paid sick leave. PPP is over. Rental assistance has stopped flowing in some states and there's no federal eviction moratorium. Basically, we're going in without a safety net.

Another caveat to the drop in Black women's unemployment: Black women's labor force participation fell between Oct and Nov, and, in fact, has been falling since August. While employment did increase, the drop in unemployment (if sustained) happened in part b/c participation fell.

NEW from @julianamkaplan @AndyKiersz and me:
Biden gambled that cutting off federal jobless aid would drive people back to work. The September jobs report blew a hole through that idea.

If the @stlouisfed model is correct, let's put to rest forever all the whining about the generosity of UI benefits, and then let's pray, because with only regular state UI our economy lacks any anti-cyclical policy. Even if job gains are small, we are in trouble.

The unemployment rate for those looking for full time jobs that pay a living wage, but are unable to find one, is a staggering 22.8%.
Again—it’s not a labor shortage, it’s a living wage shortage.

I'm so upset and scared. I'm immunocompromised, so I can't return to in-person work. Most places around here don't mandate masks. It feels like the Biden admin is telling me to either go to work and die, or stay home and starve.

In August, the labor market improved slightly _more_ in states that did not cut off federal UI early than in cutoff states.
Since May, employment up similarly in both types of states, though unemployment fell more in cutoff states.
