Congratulations to Carol @MarbinMiller on landing at @TheFloridaTrib as editor-at-large. "I’ll be joining a growing young staff of very talented journalists trying to create something special within a struggling industry," she announced today. She adds: "It’s a player-coach gig, and my plan is to continue to report stories about Floridians at the margins – children, elders, people with disabilities – who suffer for lack of care or services."

All writers: good advice here
We have new artificial intelligence guidelines on Stylebook Online, informed by the AP's own policies on what we do and don't do with AI. One tip: Any output from an AI tool should be treated as unvetted source material. You must apply your editorial judgment and sourcing standards when considering and editing any information for publication. This is a really interesting debate. Depending on the story, keep your notes for at least a year, but also use the guidance your outlet's legal counsel provides. But there's also a slippery slope of releasing notes/audio every time someone questions reporting.
I trust the Times over Holmes/Evans on the accuracy of the quote. But I gotta say, the idea of doing a profile of someone this well-known, with a reputation for dishonesty, and not recording, gives me hives. This is exactly why you record! nytimes.com/2026/10/22/insid…

Nearly 60 journalists who recently landed positions in a new newsroom explained how to get a job right now. Most of them had the same advice: You need to network more. poynter.org/commentary/2026/…

A reminder to journalists to save all of your past work, and/or utilize Wayback Machine's web archive because one day, all of your written work over the last 7-8 years on a website could be just wiped away. 🙂‍↕️

New day, new X handle: @byMarkWoods Created the old one in early days of Twitter, putting a “TU” in front of my name. Now that I’m no longer a Times-Union employee — cleaned out my desk the other day and unearthed all kinds of memories — figured it was time to change the handle.

This is so good. As a former small-town sports editor, what we did *mattered*. Saturday morning meant a game story - with quotes & reaction - and full boxscores from every game. Previews on Thursdays. Features, coverage of all sports. You knew what was going on in the area.
High school sports participation is at an all-time high. Local sports journalism staffs are shrinking. A look at the changing business of high school sports media — and what gets lost when local coverage disappears.

Dolphins HC Jeff Hafley was visibly taken aback by the lack of reporters at his press conference today, with many of them attending Heat Media Day instead: Coach: “is this everyone that’s coming …?” Reporter: “it’s Heat media day.” It’s clear what team runs this city 🔥
