An auto-dependent society puts tremendous pressure on low-income people to own cars. A car can eat up someone’s budget, expose them to predatory lenders who hurt their credit, or worse. And they're getting more expensive. My latest for @voxdotcom vox.com/23753949/cars-cost-o…

One Trump ally after his Nicki Minaj quote: “The closing here has been ass, both literally and figuratively.”
I trust the Times over Holmes/Evans on the accuracy of the quote. But I gotta say, the idea of doing a profile of someone this well-known, with a reputation for dishonesty, and not recording, gives me hives. This is exactly why you record!

legally obligated at this point in the lifecycle of this tweet to say: go find me on substack!! marincogan.substack.com/abou…
Yes, and Holmes is clearly not trustworthy. But you learn very quickly when reporting on pols and other high profile people that some will lie if a quote comes back to bite them. Recording is a very easy insurance policy against this. All you have to do is say "roll the tape!"

If they truly had the clip they would’ve played it for Nathan plain and simple. Also interesting how her memory works w this one quote so well but not about the conditions of the labs she was in for years

If it keeps going at this rate, we might, for (I think) the first time in history, be about to witness the first continent-wide youth revolt in Europe - a "European spring" of sorts.
The sheer number of countries where it's **already** happening is pretty overwhelming. I count 8, including 4 with violent clashes:
- France, famously
- Albania (see below) with daily clashes in Tirana and a government building set alight
- Belgium: the French movement spilled over, including riots in Liège
- Italy: "No Meloni Day" student protests since 16 October, turning into riots in Milan, Turin and Bologna
- Greece: students camping in Athens' Syntagma Square over housing and education costs, explicitly inspired by France
- Germany: pupils blockading schools in Berlin and Hamburg in solidarity with France
- Spain: an indefinite education strike in Madrid, with students marching alongside teachers and families
- Serbia: the student movement born from the 2024 Novi Sad station collapse is now running its own list in the 25 October election
And, by the way, the fact it's also happening in countries with close to no immigration - like Albania - goes to show how reductive it is to label these movements, like JD Vance and Trump did with France, as the fruit of "the migrants hav[ing] taken over."
As is often the case, it's much more a story of "it's the economy, stupid." As such, Trump with his war on Iran, has ironically done much more to fuel this (pun intended) than any migrant.

Deporting a sitting member of congress because she’s Muslim would be the most fascistic thing America has done internally since Japanese internment

This @megreenwell piece on reading is very good. So close to the ground and well reported. IMO it brings something different to the table than the super high-level civilizational-decline pieces on reading. wired.com/story/mississippi-…

The ribbon-cutting for this DC rec center was February 28, 2026. It was a $16 million project. How has the gym already been broken and closed for a month?
$16M spent. 6 months open. Now the Anacostia Rec Center gym is closed because the floor buckled. It’s been almost a month with no reopening timeline. 30+ young people are outside daily with little to no programming.
@DCDPR how does a brand-new $16M facility, gym closed?

The thing about cutting parking fines in half is that the D.C. Council would have to pay for the lost revenue. And that, these days, would be a challenging task.
Councilmember @RobertWhite_DC said this morning he wants to HALVE parking fines in D.C. (Will propose as an amendment to @BrianneKNadeau's strategic parking enforcement bill. But @ChmnMendelson says it isn't germane.)

I got really annoyed that so many stories about the "Cornell 7" case don't link to the underlying court documents.
So I compiled the key filings from Jane Doe's civil suit and from a separate suit brought by one of the accused.

NEW from me:
Over the last four years, America has lost more than 200k jobs in creative fields like publishing, film, TV, or graphic design. It's the worst stretch for arts jobs outside of major recessions.
How much is AI to blame? And can the arts' business model survive?🧵
