This is a total overhaul, front and back. On the pitch and off it. The additions both on and off the field are genuinely exciting. I miss Eddie, I miss Bruno, and that era gave us some incredible memories, but this feels like the start of a very exciting new chapter. I hate that the rules are rigged against clubs growing quickly, but bloody hell, it’s exciting seeing what Newcastle are putting together. The Premier League’s “Big Six” want spending rules linked to revenue, then fight against commercial rights being shared more collectively. That’s the problem with FFP/SCR. Big clubs already have the biggest revenues because of decades of success. The rules then allow them to spend more BECAUSE they have bigger revenues, while ambitious clubs are restricted from investing enough to catch them. Now the same clubs want to protect even more commercial income for themselves. So the cycle becomes: Big revenue → bigger spending allowance → more success → even bigger revenue → bigger spending allowance. Financial sustainability is important. Protecting the established elite is not. At some point we need to stop pretending this creates a level playing field.
