Happy Birthday Johannes #Vermeer Oct 31, 1632 - Dec 15, 1675 So accurate in his perspective, Vermeer has inspired much debate about whether or not he used a #cameraobscura, or other tools, to assist. Note the tiles on the floor, the reflection in the mirror (!), and the leading in the glass. Some scholars insist that he did use mechanical assistance, by virtue of the practically inhuman accuracy. Others have great reasons for thinking otherwise, i.e., many of his subjects and compositions were invented, (though he often painted the same room). Whether he did or he did not use such tools, his attention to detail, and his accuracy of tone and light, this painting is indisputably divine. The Music Lesson May 1696

An electron in hydrogen does not orbit the nucleus like a planet. Its wavefunction forms a 3D structure of probability, phase, and invisible nodal surfaces. When two quantum states overlap, their interference can make the electron cloud oscillate. The energy difference between 3d and 2p corresponds to hydrogen's Hα spectral line at 656.3 nm.

#FujiFarm contributed in a small way to this good news.
Monarch butterfly numbers climbed 64% this season, thanks in part to the growing number of people creating pollinator gardens. It’s a clear reminder of what shared purpose can accomplish. Look what we did Their recovery is still fragile, though, so continuing, and expanding those plantings next year remains essential.

This book by @iamfujimura starts with a reflection of his scientist father who valued beauty and cultivated such a value in his son. Worth a read for a scientist.

This fear will never be realized - how can I say this so definitely? Pattern matching algorithms (misnamed as “A.I.”) can only repeat, rearrange and the scale what is most popular. In other words, if the LLM algorithm can produce a novel, it will do it millions of times once something gains a bit of attention. That will saturate the market and no one would want to read it at all (other than machine reading machines..which is another topic). There is no supply and demand - only supply and more supply. See what already happened to over-saturation of NFT’s and early videos of simulated videos. While the latter can fool the eye, we are already beyond saturation. NFT was a fad, and only lasted while it was novel and cool. While there will be enduring digital media and pattern matching expressions (including certain NFT like tokens), it’s not because of machines taking over, but it is the ability of a few to create unique, particular and scarce expressions that uses the patterns to generate something new, that cannot be scaled, connect new ideas to another (which pattern matching does very well) and something that creates a more beautiful embedded story for the future. Now the danger of all of this is not that art will be replaced, but that participation in evil deed will also be made possible at a larger scale. What is ugly can also be multiplied. This is a battle of a sanctified imagination verses destructive imagination. For that, we need Dante, Van Gogh and Tolkiens for sure.
We don’t talk about this enough. If we reach a point where art, music & literature are made solely by machines, there will never again be a Dante, a Beatles. No Tolkiens or Van Goghs. We will look back in disbelief at a time when humans did amazing things. Never again.

#CultureCare is to manifest our power of belief in our making.
“History teaches us that the power of belief should never be underestimated, neither in the present or in the past nor perhaps in the future as well. Its power is a constant, ever ready to be tapped, for good or for ill. Its power is a constant, always there in the profane as much as in the sacred, ever on the edge of surging, ever ready to be tapped, for good or for ill. ... Belief is the immortal soul of the imagination...Anything is Possible.” Carlos Eire, They Flew: A History of the Impossible. (Thanks RoMa @allsaintsptn) @iamculturecare
