Russia's Mediazona themselves explaining that their Russian casualty numbers (the main dataset used by world media) lag behind over two years, and that past years continue to ramp up as confirmations still pour in even from 2022. Further citing that many can never be counted at all for several reasons, like if the soldier was considered "DPR Militia" or foreign. Only Ukraine's General Staff numbers are an accurate gauge, as we had always assumed.
Replying to @clement_molin
Hi there. Dima Treschanin of Mediazona here. 1. We don’t consider our 2022–2023 data to be “broadly complete.” We do have non-public data that would add several thousand more people, including about a thousand from Wagner PMC alone. But our methodology is fairly conservative, and we don’t want to change it midstream. 2. According to our data so far, 2025 has been the deadliest year of the war. Although we have identified more than 100,000 people killed with dates of death in 2024, we know for certain that losses in 2025 were significantly higher. Collecting that data will take considerable time, though; it’s simply an enormous amount of work. 3. Thanks to non-public sources, we can see how long it takes the state to register deaths. For example, we’re currently working through a list in which most of the people were likely killed in the summer or early fall of 2025. Today we learned the dates of death for nine of them, and roughly the same number last week. To be clear: these people died last summer. Their obituaries, if they appear at all, will be published some time from now. 4. As for 2026, the situation is even worse: even government agencies (outside the MoD) don’t know how many people have been killed this year. And let’s be real, the MoD itself may not have the full picture either. 5. The more “static” the front line, the harder it is to recover bodies. The harder it is to recover bodies, the larger the share of soldiers listed as missing in action, and the longer and more difficult the identification process becomes. This also leads to more errors in which living people are declared dead; such cases are very rare, but they do happen. 6. Barring any major changes at the front, we expect that for the rest of this year and most of next, the new data we add will mainly concern 2025. 7. For this reason, we can’t say whether 2026 will prove deadlier than 2025. But there is no reason to believe the situation has improved in any way for the Russian army: broadly, the same tactics and strategy are being used as in 2025. That said, any claim of rising losses requires evidence, and we don’t have that evidence yet.

NEW: Russian President Vladimir Putin used his October 27 call with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store to reiterate Moscow’s longstanding demands in Ukraine and rearticulate Moscow’s claims that NATO expansion is among the “root causes” of the war. Putin also stated that “root causes” must be resolved as preconditions for any future peace negotiations. Other Key Takeaways: Russia and Ukraine began observing a limited ceasefire in Russian-occupied Oleshky, Kherson Oblast, on October 27 to facilitate humanitarian aid deliveries and evacuate civilians from the settlement. Both sides are reportedly abiding by the ceasefire terms as of this writing. It remains unclear how the Russian authorities will treat Ukrainians evacuated from Oleshky and whether Russian occupation authorities will provide the residents a legitimate and duress-free choice to return to Ukrainian government-controlled Ukraine. The Russian 26th Tank Regiment (47th Tank Division, 1st Guards Tank Army [GTA], Moscow Military District) operating in the Kupyansk direction is reportedly planning to disband several platoons to create an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) company. Neither Russian nor Ukrainian forces advanced on October 27. Russian forces launched an unspecified number of Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles and 280 drones against Ukraine overnight.

NEW: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his willingness for a complete or partial ceasefire, including moratoriums on strikes against energy infrastructure or the Black Sea, but the Kremlin continues to reject a ceasefire. Other Key Takeaways: The Kremlin's current negotiating position on the war in Ukraine continues to include Moscow’s longstanding demand from before the full-scale invasion that NATO change its charter and roll back its membership to NATO’s former 1997 borders. Ukraine’s long-range strike campaign is forcing Russia to relocate its data infrastructure and augment protection measures for data centers. Russia launched one Kh-31P anti-radiation missile, three Kh-59 or Kh-69 cruise missiles, and 140 drones (including 70 jet-powered ones) against Ukraine overnight on October 25 to 26. Ukrainian forces continued their long-range strike campaign against Russian industrial facilities and logistics infrastructure overnight on October 25 and 26.

This chart is insane. This shows Russia's casualties over time compared to Russia's territorial gains in Ukraine over the last five years. No sane or rational person would say continuing the war to try and take more of Ukraine's territory is worth the casualties.

Arson, sabotage, and drones: 52 suspected hybrid attacks by Russia and Belarus recorded in Europe. According to an investigation by "Vot Tak" and various European media outlets, 48 incidents that occurred between April 1 and October 15, 2026, are linked to Russia, while four others are attributed to Belarus. Cyberattacks and information operations are not included in this count. The highest number of incidents—nine in total—was recorded in Poland. These include a fire at a facility that manufactures components for combat drones, as well as an arson attack on a Starlink station. In Germany, there were attempts to target a defense company, an airport, and a military airfield; meanwhile, in Norway, GPS signals were disrupted. Belarus is exerting migration pressure on the EU’s external borders and monitoring members of the opposition. Furthermore, weather balloons launched from Belarusian territory led to the temporary suspension of flight operations at Vilnius Airport. ❗️ The GUR (Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense) warns that Russia is preparing provocations in Europe aimed at placing a burden on Ukraine and weakening Western support. This past week alone, Russia has launched around 1,600 guided aerial bombs, 48 missiles of various types, including ballistic missiles, and nearly 2,300 attack drones against Ukraine. Unfortunately, almost every day, these brutal strikes leave people killed and injured. In the evening, Russian strikes on the Dnipro region killed four people. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 22 people were injured, including an 11-year-old girl. In Vinnytsia, a Russian drone struck a high-rise apartment building. Six people were injured. In Kharkiv, the Russians first struck a home improvement hypermarket and then carried out a cynical double-tap strike on the emergency services that arrived at the scene. First responders were injured. There were also strikes overnight on a thermal power plant, substations, coal mines, grain storage facilities, shopping malls, and a postal logistics hub. Damage has been reported in nine regions. This is how Russia responds to diplomacy and deisolation. And it is very important that support for those who protect lives not diminish alongside the negotiation process. We need to unblock the deliveries of Patriot interceptors already approved by European countries. We need to continue supporting Ukrainian combat aviation to defend against jet-powered “shaheds.” Every such defense package, especially ahead of winter, helps save lives. I thank all partners who provide this kind of support. @ZelenskyyUa

Ukraine, not Russia, has held the initiative in key sectors of the frontline for much of the year. Ukrainian forces have decisively defeated the main Russian offensive intended to complete the seizure of Donetsk Oblast in 2026. Ukrainian forces operationally defeated the Russian northern pincer in the Lyman direction and defeated the Russian military command’s plan to conduct a wide encirclement of Ukraine’s Fortress Belt. Ukraine’s Operation Vivaldi resulted in the liberation of around 277 square kilometers and 16 settlements north and northeast of Lyman over four phases that Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps Commander Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi began announcing in September 2026, although the operation likely began around March 2026.
MORE: Putin is trying once again to breathe life into the myth of inevitable Russian military victory in order to persuade the United States and other supporters of Ukraine to compel Kyiv to surrender. Putin constantly asserts that Russian forces are making gains along the entire frontline. He makes claims of territorial gains so far from reality as to be fantasy. He hearkens back to the Soviet Union and the Red Army to evoke images of Soviet hordes overrunning the German Wehrmacht. But these claims, images, and maps of supposed Russian gains are all fictional. Reality is quite the opposite.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense has concluded contracts with nearly 46,000 foreigners from 151 countries around the world in total. About half of the foreign POWs interviewed by the Ukrainian side knew they would be fighting against Ukraine. Brigadier General Dmytro Usov, secretary of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, stated this at the fourth international conference Crimea Global: Understanding Ukraine Through The South. “At the last conference, we presented figures showing that 28,000 foreigners from 138 countries had been mobilized or recruited into the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Today we already have a figure of nearly 46,000 foreigners who have signed contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense, from 151 countries around the world,” Usov said.
