Graduate school means constantly feeling like you’re not doing enough but also doing too much. So you’re burning out but also feeling like you’re not making enough progress towards your goals to actually deserve a break and it’s all very confusing #phdchat

Being part of a toxic program is exhausting.
If you teach a 3 hour online Zoom class and only give people one 3 minute break during that class, you need to do just not do that.
Data analysis time, which means time for me to cry tears of frustration into my computer.
I want to drop out of grad school SO BADLY. I don't like it. Any of it. I'm already planning on leaving academia after finishing anyways because it's so toxic. But frankly, I just don't have the guts to leave before finishing, even if it means 2-3 more years of misery.

I was just *getting by* in grad school; surviving. Now I’ve been keeping my place clean, working out regularly, getting sleep, focusing on my health - my overall quality of life has improved. It took a pandemic for me to finally start living again.

Michael Brown. Freddie Gray. George Floyd. We have been here time and time again — and still police officers kill with impunity. Giving more resources to the police to change themselves doesn’t work. It's time to completely reimagine policing in America.washingtonpost.com/investiga…

For academics (especially White academics, but this goes for everyone) reading #BlackintheIvory and wondering how you can support Black students and academics here is a thread of things to consider a number which have been especially supportive of my own professional development

I just realized this Twitter account has been completely silent because I've been using my other, non-anonymous social media accounts to denounce systemic racism and police brutality, and call for change. I want to make it clear where I stand and why this account has been quiet.

I certainly should have included my following on here and should have spoken about these issues on this account long ago.
As of today, I have a Masters degree!

I should definitely be prepping for my M.A. defense but instead I am stress-eating cupcakes and pasta.

My Chair sent me an absolutely NASTY email questioning me as an educator and professional, casting doubt on my choices, and attempting to dictate class policy. For all their blanket emails about togetherness and morale during COVID, they really don't care about us at all.
If I have to sit through ONE MORE 3 hour Zoom for the rest of my life I will start a RIOT.

slowly coming to terms with the fact that this fall I will probably either have to a) risk my health to teach in-person b) put in 4x the physical and emotional labor to teach online again or c) have my funding cut and have to drop out of my program. can't wait to find out.

If you are a graduate student in possession of an unsigned GTA contract, SIGN IT NOW. Universities are already saying they're not sure whether they can honor Fall GTA offers given the financial crises they're facing. Put your name on that line NOW. Guarantee it. #academictwitter
