The immortal Doug Sahm at about the age of 10. I've told a couple of stories about personal interactions I had with Doug over the years (all positive) but I read a first person account of Doug's Austin rental house in "No Depression" magazine and its great. In the summer of 1973, Doug was living in a rented wooden house on a hillside above Soap Creek Saloon outside Austin. According to this firsthand reminiscence, the house contained a bed, table, two chairs, two sets of silverware, two plates, a phonograph, hundreds of records, amplifiers, and guitars. His record collection included everything from Bob Wills and Lightnin' Hopkins to Miles Davis and John Coltrane. The refrigerator contained Big Red, Pearl Beer, and old tamales. He didn't even have a telephone. In other words, Doug had stripped his worldly possessions down to the absolute essentials: music, a place to sleep, refreshments ... and old tamales. I just love this so much. He was all about the music.
