You'd be lucky to have her on your team. I occasionally forget that SJ is 21 & just graduated uni, it breaks my brain to reconcile that with how much she knows and does. If anyone has ever given me "you're gonna go far" vibes, she's it.
Hey #AlgoFam 💚
Yesterday, I was also impacted by the @AlgoFoundation layoffs.
#Algorand helped me discover my obsession with blockchain at 16 and inspired me to study softdev. The journey from Ambassador to Integration Specialist, working my way up for nearly 6 years!

Hey Algofam. The cross-chain atomic swap protocol is getting closer to public testing. Doing some final UX fixing while recording a presentation + demo.
Algorand's instant finality and blazing blocktime makes it ideal for this purpose.

I am begging someone to read this shit. The industry is completely ruined; GitHub crashes every day because of morons like this pushing three hundred thousand lines of, and I quote:
"Rust implementation of the Lean 4 toolchain with -olean, C ABI, LSP, and CLI compatibility; deterministic parallelism; declaration-level incrementality; and a dual-engine kernel capped at 12 KLOC."
I'm in no way anti-artificial-intelligence; in fact I would consider myself somewhat radically in favor of it, but what I am anti- is empowering demented fools to vomit infinite dreck into the commons.
Enjoy garbage world, I guess.

The whole Navier-Stoke drama is unbelievable.
OpenAI could've gone "Researchers cracked Navier-Stoke with the help of ChatGPT" and it would be headlines as good use of AI.
But instead they wanted to push the narrative the AI did it on its own, which would only backfire.

unfortunately i contacted them on the night of wednesday, september 2nd making the following points
1. i had intel they had information about math work i was doing and a few days before they had spun up a group to try to compete.
2. i emphasized and reemphasized mine was a strictly personal mathematical collaboration
3. that this was a collaboration that had been going on for a year
4. that in my personal collaboration we were happy users of codex as well as obviously claude (and i later complimented astra explicitly after it came out for its help, and reassured i would obviously be sprinkling acknowledgments for it, previous models, and codex liberally in the writeups)
5. that it would look terrible if openai were competing against mathematician consumers, and my collaborator (Tristan) wanted to email about this explicitly
6. that i expected none but in the worst case intended to refuse marketing around the result we were working towards, being the fruit of a personal external academic collaboration, and wanted to express this because i figured worries about such marketing by their leadership was why a team was spun up to extraordinarily directly compete.
sebastien and i have in the past months had our fun pushing each other on twitter, but as i process it all i keep feeling bad about Tristan.
1. neither of us could sleep Sunday night, so we went on a walk around the city. i finally asked him why fluids, and he told me it was the navier-stokes problem. he told me parts of the story about his classic nonuniqueness result with Vicol i hadn’t heard yet, and also about how he too grew up writing shaders as a kid and then switched to math
2. tristan is a mathematician’s mathematician. he kept rock solid to his principles during the tense calls and negotiations, immediately turning down a career dream and million dollar prize for me, the sort of strange excited unclear-quasiuseful confused idiot in our collaboration. fifteen minutes later, his feet were up on his desk with three toes per foot peeking out of ripped socks
3. our periodic call after i’d texted him euler blowup was just laughing for an hour or two. just laughing. i’d seen fable deal correctly with monge ampere in the equality case of ehrhart’s conjecture, so in some call before that i’d really pushed him for the craziest shit he could think of that i might try. i texted him the pdf as an update on that “diego luis 3” line, in which following his incredible expression of intuition i hodgepodge slapped together a bunch of our recent work, in particular correcting a bunch of better and lesser known papers in the literature, as well as on diego and luis’ ipm paper, and hoped an analogous construction for boussinesq (thus axisym euler) might work out. i managed to wade through enough confusion to insist to the model it stop telling me stupid regularity stuff about kelvin waves, and a rayleigh-taylor ansatz stuck. like i said, just laughing. when i texted him the pdf, the worst thing either of us had seen so far, i didn’t even comment on the euler blowup claim, only explaining why skepticism should remain for boussinesq, because i found it so shocking. i mean what the hell did i know, i must’ve confused myself by misunderstanding one adjective like i was used to with algebraic geometry. im so lucky to have been able to live that
4. he managed all this this entire time with unclear sleep, timestamps continue to amaze me, due to just recently having a kid
it is obvious he deserves the same sort of praise he heaped upon luis, perhaps mutatis mutandis:)
Replying to @__alpoge__
nothing at all was locked we were just willing to talk but you didn't talk to us ... sorry but that's just untrue, we were willing to go above and beyond and have as many discussions as you would have liked to reach resolution.

all oai had to do was just wait and these guys would've said "look what codex helped us do", but they couldn't even do that

If you near solving P vs NP, Riemann, or Collatz, and ask an LLM to check your work, it flags it to its AI lab owners to scoop you. The $$$ incentives are too large. I drafted this joke a few days ago, was working to polish it, but must now rush it out on pain of being scooped.

Spain's mistake over Ceuta was merely unpreparedness. Europe's much bigger mistake was attacking a Member State under an external (and likely coordinated) aggression just to score some meaningless political points at home instead of rallying around it and defend European borders.

Disgusting behaviour by the Argentinians at the end, especially Paredes.
Just a bunch of nasty violent thugs, and a disgrace to football. Never been so happy to see a team lose.

On Thursday, the European Parliament “adopted” the extension of Chat Control 1.0. This is the temporary suspension of the EU’s ePrivacy rules that allows tech platforms to mass-scan citizens’ private communications, ostensibly to detect child sexual abuse material. “Adopted” is placed in quotation marks here because the word implies something that conspicuously failed to happen: a majority of MEPs voting in favour. In fact, 314 MEPs voted to reject the text, against 276 in favour. And yet it passed anyway.
This was made possible through a procedural sleight of hand worthy of Brussels at its most cynical. The file was rammed through under an “urgency procedure”: European Parliament President Roberta Metsola unilaterally reopened a dossier that MEPs had already rejected in March, and the Council conveniently bounced it back at the start of the summer recess, when securing attendance is hardest. Rejecting it a second time would have required not a simple majority but an absolute one: 360 votes. The law was therefore approved despite a majority of MEPs voting against it. The regulation will now remain in force until April 2028, buying time for negotiations on its even more ambitious successor, Chat Control 2.0.
As German MEP @FabioDeMasi noted following the vote, Chat Control is a “legislative zombie” — a measure the European Parliament has rejected multiple times, revived again and again until the desired outcome emerges. This episode should give pause to those who insist that the EU’s democratic deficit could be cured by handing more power to the European Parliament. Here is that very institution’s president working with the Council to resurrect a file the Parliament itself had buried. If this is how the Parliament operates, empowering it further would only deepen this democratic deficit, lending a thicker veneer of legitimacy to what remains, at bottom, an executive-bureaucratic machine that treats votes as obstacles to be engineered around.

Werte Abgeordnete,

🇪🇺 The EU is now for the 6th time trying to force Chat Control through which lets them scan ALL your private messages, photos and emails without a warrant
Implictly showing the EU is not democratic and not about what the people of Europe want, because once a law is rejected, you just re-submit it until nobody is watching and it's passed
November 2023: ❌ Chat Control is rejected
June 2024: ❌ Chat Control is rejected
October 2025: ❌ Chat Control is rejected
November 2025: ❌ Chat Control is rejected
March 2026: ❌ Chat Control is rejected
July 2026: 📝 Chat Control is back
Even the EU's own lawyers stated Chat Control is unconstitutional: "generalised message scanning is incompatible with Article 7 of the EU Charter"
You have to wonder why the EU is so adament about reading your private chats, right?
Schreiben Sie also gefälligst etwas unterhaltsamer in den kommenden Wochen... ZwinkerSmiley!

The EU Parliament REJECTED Chat Control, but now they are forcing us to vote it AGAIN to revive it. What kind of democracy is this if we're forced to vote on the same issue over and over until they get the result they want?
My colleague @MarketkaG explained the situation very well in plenary👇🏻

Dear FIFA,
I assume you watched the France vs. Paraguay match. The referee, Ilgiz Tantashev, delivered a truly unacceptable performance. This is a football match, not a boxing or MMA fight.
Elbows, punches, and countless brutal challenges went completely unpunished. I'm not even talking about your overall card policy anymore—this level of officiating is simply unacceptable. It's a disgrace. The French players have families too.
The fact that Paraguay went the entire 90 minutes without receiving a single card, despite repeated violent challenges and even confrontations between players, is impossible to justify. This referee seems to think that refusing to show cards is some kind of achievement.
What's even more unbelievable is that he didn't have the courage to book Paraguay's players even when five of them deliberately surrounded and blocked the penalty spot.
Either this referee had money on the match, or something else was going on. It was an absolute joke. @FIFAcom @FIFAWorldCup
