The worst part of speaking a second language isn’t the grammar. It’s the version of you the other person meets: slower, simpler, nicer.

People from Somalia frequently love to circulate this famous quotation below by the Irish writer and travelor Gerald Hanley. The problem is that the writer's observations were drawn only from his encounters with Somalilanders during his travels and experiences in British Somaliland, whose people and way of life he described at length in his celebrated book, "Warriors and Strangers: Life Among the Somalis", presenting it as a testament to Somalilnders' national character, courage and fierce sense of independence.
In other words,Somalians who proudly circulate Hanley's words should at least acknowledge the people and the land that inspired them.
The irony is that a quotation so enthusiastically embraced by Somalians as a source of national pride has its roots in the very Somaliland whose distinct history and identity none of those Somlians sharing it refuse to acknowledge.

Do not speak negatively about yourself, even as a joke. Your body does not know the difference.
Words are energy and they cast spells, that is why it is called spelling.

1. The first mention of the Horn of Africa by Greco-Romans was the Somali region which they referred to it as “Regio Cinnamonifera”
They named the region after cinnamon which shows how significant Somalis were in the spice trade during the Classical antiquity period.

The last one week has brought home to me the terrifying realisation the antipathy towards Somaliland and the Isaaq runs deep, is quasi-genocidal in nature.
I now understand why victims of the Barre pogroms opted to create their own seperate state and said never again.

In the black community, New Year’s Day used to be widely known as 'Hiring Day' or 'Heartbreak Day', because enslaved people spent New Year’s Eve waiting, wondering if their owners were going to rent them out to someone else, thus potentially splitting up their families...
