you're not engaging in fandom by reading a fic on a google drive you are consuming content that has been removed from the space the person who wrote it posted it on . most people don't care about being popular they care that their work means enough to engage w/ them .
Fandom spaces have been infiltrated by people who want to be popular/ treated like influencers for their contributions as opposed to just people excited to be surrounded by other people who like the same thing they like and want to show them the cool shit they wrote.

back in 2013 when i was on tumblr, there was this rule about not speaking about tumblr or fanfiction irl or with "normies". it might have been cringe, but i looking back i think they had a point

late to this discourse but i do think 90% of fandom discourse happens bc of idiots needing to be spoonfed by other ppl what is appropriate to do and what’s not, instead of just using their own brains to think. in what world is reposting other ppl’s fics on gdrive okay, u idiots

If you see my fic on a public drive it did not have my permission to be there and no one asked me. Miss me w the “authors are engagement hungry” because I’m going to look thru your twt and see how many times you sad posted about <10 likes on a tweet

Idk man, I haven't decided what I'm going to do overall or if I'll continue posting (when I already write content that twtbro moral police find objectionable) but at the least I'm gonna be switching on those registered users only options. Anons are no longer welcome, I'm sorry

that's such a good point actually. somehow asking for our work and boundaries to be respected is individualistic and capitalist but exploiting millions of people's work without including their creators is community. sounds like a lazy argument to me.
People claiming the fic drives are for community well then you could've made it an community effort instead of trampling over authors. You could've opened a drive for willing fic authors to put their works! Most of us don't write on the archive directly we do have copies!

not gonna say anymore on this but when ao3 comes back up you bet your ass I'm gonna be leaving comments on every fic I read for every shitty opinion I saw over this weekend because I have free will and i certainly don't want to run the writers in my fandom out!

The whole damn thread please
I’m taking this as an opportunity to educate and explain what archives in real life mean. As someone working in the GLAM sector. An archive doesn’t automatically mean unrestricted access. Some materials need permissions and others can be only viewed on-site. Some materials are

at this point it's not about fanfic for me. it's about the fact so, so many of you are so comfortable being disgustingly, horrifically inconsiderate and cruel to other human beings. down to calling them parasitic, expendable, replaceable, all for expressing normal human emotion

I met my partner through engagement on my fics, bc I was invited to the fan party for my contribution to the community. Insane that people genuinely think authors shouldn't need and don't deserve community
i dont really have anyone irl (shocking, ik 😪) and coming on here is my way of connecting to people, writing is a form of communication after all

"You don't own the rights to your fanwork anyway!" - except you do on the grounds of that work being transfromative. Ao3 has two clauses explaining how it works. Which a platform with a full team of lawyers would know something about. Maybe ACTUALLY read that ToS next time, hm?
