I think #RPGMakerU2U needs something similar to what they did in star ocean 2 remake, where you had sprites facing in different directions and depending on the camera angle, it just picks the appropriate direction. It can probably be scripted in I guess youtu.be/Hl3AuAVC8Ss?si=zz0i…
This falling feature is kind of cute. #RPGMakerU2U has native support for falling off platforms onto the platforms below, and you can customize it per object edge as opposed to a global tileset setting.
#RPGMakerU2U does have a "passage override" feature that allows you to customize the passage settings for individual tiles on the map. So if you wanted to create hidden walls, this is made easy.
This kind of thing would have needed workarounds with scripts in the older engines.
It looks like you can paint over 3D object surfaces with the 2D tilesets. So you would use the 3D object placement to create elevated platforms, and then go to the "deco painting" tool to customize the tiles on the elevation itself.
Marking on the wall? No problem #RPGMakerU2U
The live preview feature in #RPGMakerU2U is quite sophisticated. You can literally fine-tune your maps in real-time and see how it looks in-game
It's just a visual thing, and passage settings aren't updated, but maybe there's a way to hot reload those changes too?
In the #RPGMakerU2U editor there is a "vertical" mode (for debugging purposes?) that makes the 3D walls and stairs look a lot better.
I think if we can just get this vertical render in-game as the default view, it might be feasible as a 3D map maker.
And fix the 2D sprites...
The 2D stuff doesn't seem to work very well with the 3D stuff, but the biggest game changer for me #RPGMakerU2U appears to be this "height" feature for the 3D objects so that you can create actual elevation. But is there a way to mix it with the autotiles?
It looks like there's an easy way to create elevated platforms in #RPGMakerU2U. Not sure how much it can be customized, but if you wanted to recreate final fantasy tactics this seems to be an option.
Trying out the #RPGmakerU2U map editor demo. Looks like they have tutorials for new users, which is pretty nice.
Then there's the "object placement mode" where you can put some 3D objects on the maps.
The 2D bridge-looking thing I tried to make looks ok top-down, but with perspective, it doesn't look good at all.
Saw maps that looked like this in new #RPGMaker demo. Seems better than trying to simulate perspective view like mode7 with flat assets. Not sure if it's specially-made versions of the classic tilesets or just a visual trick with the same old assets
