Can’t afford to keep the library service going but happy to waste money on empty shuttle service that few use. #priorities Croydon- style

What’s happening in Croydon, Ealing and other councils around the country is the destruction of a crucial statutory service. We all hoped that @UKLabour @lisanandy @RhonddaBryant would intervene to halt/reverse library cuts & closures but we’re still waiting. #savelibraries

The success/future of a library/service shouldn’t be based on numbers. We pander far too much to Senior Managers & Cllrs who can read a spreadsheet but don’t really understand the true worth of what they have. Impact & outcomes are far more important. #libraries

The silence from @UKLabour re the crisis in the Public Libraries sector has been deafening, oh there’s been glitzy receptions in parliament and cosy meetings with prof orgs BUT users, staff, unions & campaigners have been virtually ignored. A tragic betrayal. #savelibraries

Deepest insult This is what library staff at Bradmore Green have been told to hand out to residents so, instead of a local, accessible library with disabled parking they are being given a bit of paper. Our disabled, elderly and all residents are horrified.

Hi @RachelReevesMP @UKLabour will there be any money for Public Libraries in the budget? And by Public Libraries I don’t mean; CML’s Hubs Telephone Boxes Shelves in a pub/church. Or a presence in a leisure centre. #libraries #labour #Budget2024

“It is implied by the 1964 Act that library authorities will fulfil their duties properly, will provide suitable buildings that can accurately be called libraries, and will employ sufficient trained, experienced, paid staff, not relying unduly on volunteers.” Francis Bennion

The Mayor just decided to close four of our libraries. Residents oppose it, community groups oppose it, Labour councillors oppose it.

“It’s a soft target, isn’t it? If you close libraries, nobody dies – that’s what they think. But what’s happening is it’s society who suffers and people who suffer.” Says Michael Rosen theguardian.com/books/articl…

Councils propose to cut/close libraries. They launch a public consultation where the majority of those consulted disagree with cuts/closures. They then cut & close. What’s the point of public consultations I hear you say? #savelibraries

Councils propose to close libraries. They do Equality Impact Assessments which show that the poorest & most vulnerable residents will be severely impacted by the closures. They then close the libraries. What’s the point of EIA’s I hear you say? #savelibraries

Hi @lisanandy this is the manifesto for libraries that ‘Speak up for Libraries’ published nearly a decade ago, it clearly outlines what the new Labour government must do to protect & promote this crucial statutory service . #savelibraries
