I think the worst part about being in the writing community is seeing people quit writing or otherwise disappear. I sometimes wonder if I should have reached out to give advice on getting more traction. But I know unsolicited advice is often unwelcome. So I’m going to give a 🧵

One of the most pervasive pieces of writing advice is also often misunderstood: “show, don’t tell.” This advice has been so drilled into our heads that we avoid “telling” like the plague. Here’s what “show, don’t tell” ACTUALLY means & how to apply it to your writing. 🧵

A reminder for my writer friends: Your story won't land w/ every reader — but it's not supposed to. This was a lesson I learned the hard way in a creative writing workshop in college.  Here’s a slightly embarrassing story for you: 🧵

I'm seeing a swell of so-called “book marketing” experts. Almost all of their accounts look freshly created. I've gotten lots of DMs from them. I'm also a marketing, branding, and social media professional by day, as it is my day job. They ask me how I'm doing and ask what I write even though my genre is in my bio. Lots of these accounts come across as fishy/fake/spammy. When I asked one of them, who kept DMing me for their resume, they got offended and asked why I needed it. Look, if you're going to pitch writers some marketing package that they have to pay for, you should have the following: 1.) A website 2.) A resume 3.) References 4.) Data analytics and proof you helped authors out Without these, please do not DM hard-working writers trying to make a living. As someone with a master’s degree and 22 certifications in marketing, creative strategy, and social media - I know what to look for. I legitimately have a certification on every platform. If you go on my website, everything is listed on the front page, including all of my education. Without the above (resume, website, references, data analysis/proof) these accounts are highly suspicious. #WritingCommunity #SocialMedia – at Redondo Beach, CA

A federal judge has held that “monopolization” claims against Amazon can move forward, with lawyers for a potential consumer class plausibly alleging that Amazon’s conduct in the e-book market has led to “reduced competition” and “higher e-book prices." pwne.ws/3P6U08b

Your opening pages have to do a lot of heavy lifting. They must entice the reader to commit hours to reading your book, & if you’re querying, they need to hook agents enough to request the full MS. Here are 3 elements your novel opening needs to do just that (a 🧵):

Reminder for #amwriting authors: You are the only one who can tell this story. If you have a story in your head that you’re itching to get out, remember that you’re the only person who can bring it into the world. If you don’t tell it, this story may never be told.

Want your story to stand out to agents, editors & readers? It has to do something that no other story has done. From lit agent Jake Lovell: “Your story must fit a space that needs filling in your genre…Be willing to go to uncomfortable places that leave a mark on your reader."

Here’s one of my favorite tricks that can help you fix almost any issue in your draft: reverse outlining. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s when you create a very detailed outline/summary of everything that happens in your novel—AFTER you’ve already finished your draft. A 🧵:

Your pages are a playground. Think of your MS as wet clay—something that can be molded & reshaped. It may even change form entirely into something you never expected. Let your story evolve into something new if that's where it needs to go.
