Google Deepmind (FNV3) CRUSHED the forecast for #Isaias up to 11 days in advance. It picked up some appreciable signal on September 23, locked in on the exact landfall location4 days before it happened, and nailed the peak intensity consistently 3 days before it happened. A new age of forecasting is upon us.

Forwarding these plots over from @FranklinJamesL’s BlueSky account. In 2025, the Google DeepMind model has outperformed everyone on track, including the NHC and the HCCA consensus. It is competitive with the NHC and HCCA on intensity as well, outperforming the hurricane models.

We will do a full recap at some point, but let's just say the global models all failed miserably, and all hail the AIFS and Graphcast. Brave new world...
The dynamical global models are now pretty consistent in depicting an unusually strong, and thus exceptionally rare, April snowstorm in New England next week. Most of the ECM/GFS/GEM deterministic and ensemble members have a powerful closed upper low in the Gulf of Maine by next Thursday morning.
Naturally, given the potentially historic nature of the event, we wondered how the AI models would look. Was a bit flabbergasted to see the differences...the figure below shows the AIFS, with the upper low over Lake Erie (!!!!) at the same valid time the ECMWF (and GFS/GEM) deterministic solutions had it in the Gulf of Maine.
For reference, GraphCast is similar to AIFS, FuXi and Pangu have the upper low somewhere in the middle, while FourCastNet is the only AI model to have the upper low in the Gulf of Maine.
Place your bets...given that the AI models are trained on historical data, and given that the storm may be a rather extreme tail event (smaller sample size historically), my money is on the global models...
