The next generation of online discourse is being built right now. I'm asking Integrally founder Steve Everist about his radical fix for broken debate: pseudonymous discourse where you build reputation by winning over your opponents, not collecting likes. nitter.gq/i/broadcasts/1DxLddzgj…

Replying to @steve_everist
@steve_everist is building a social media platform that rewards intellectual integrity (@IntegrallyLLC ). Imagine how different our world would be if such algorithms prevailed?
Why are internet conversations so negative?
Godwin's law states that as an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis approaches one.
This isn't literally true, but negativity does increase as online discussions grow longer. A new archival analysis of over 2 billion Reddit comments finds that online dialogue becomes more negative over time.
Negativity increases over time because social media users seek to make unique comments and stand out from others, and it is easier to differentiate oneself through negative comments (rather than through agreement).
The basic human motive to stand out interacts with the structure of social media platforms to disrupt healthy online dialogue.

More pundits and "public intellectuals" are letting their disagreements devolve into insults and emotional outbursts in place of reason and dialogue.
It's incompatible with today's reality, where every idea is up for debate, whether we like it or not: wetheblacksheep.com/p/is-fre…

When you get past the fear of being wrong, the world opens up to you.
Instead of being enslaved to your beliefs, you're free to question yourself, have good disagreements with anyone, and when need be, change.

“I’m not saying there aren’t people who need to be in prison, who are dangerous to society.
I get that, of course.
But there are a lot of non-violent and reformed people who don’t have a hope of getting out.”
