keep it. Finders Keepers losers weepers
I found an envelope stuffed with $4,000 in cash inside a used book I bought at a garage sale this weekend, and I’m struggling with what to do next. The book was a beat-up paperback copy of an old economics textbook from the 1990s. When I flipped open the back cover to check the binding, a thick envelope slid out and landed softly on my living room rug. Inside were twenty-dollar bills, neatly banded together with a fading paper bank strap. There was no name, no note, and no return address. Just a heavy lump of cash tucked inside pages about supply and demand. At first, honestly, my mind raced with what I could use it for. Car repairs I’d been putting off, bills piling up, and a little breathing room after a rough couple of months. It felt like a bizarre stroke of anonymous luck. Then I looked back at the front cover. The original owner had written a name and a small date in neat, shaky cursive inside the flyleaf: H. Miller, 1998. I went back to the house where I bought the book. It was an elderly couple selling off their belongings before downsizing. The husband didn’t remember selling that specific book, and his hands trembled as he talked about the medical bills they’d been struggling to manage. I didn’t say anything about the envelope. I just walked back to my car, holding $4,000 that could fix my immediate problems, but staring

but staring back at a house where someone might desperately need that money. I’ve spent the entire evening thinking about what I should do with the $4,000. Legally, I bought the book and everything inside it. But morally, the situation feels very different. That money could help me catch up on bills, repair my car, and finally breathe after months of financial pressure. But what if it belongs to that elderly couple? What if it represents their savings, and they simply forgot where they hid it years ago? I keep imagining how I’d feel if I were in their position. I haven’t made a decision yet. If you were in my shoes, would you return the money to the elderly couple, or consider it a windfall that found its way to you?
