What’s a sex scene that was genuinely essential to the story, revealing something about the characters or changing the course of the plot, rather than just being there for the sake of it?

There's a scene in The Dark Knight where Alfred explains to Bruce Wayne that some people simply cannot be reasoned with. They aren't interested in money, personal gain or anything you might ordinarily associate with someone's motives. As Alfred famously puts it, "Some men just want to watch the world burn." I've been thinking about that scene while watching what's happening in France. People keep trying to make sense of the destruction. Why burn down buildings? Why smash up businesses? Why destroy the very places ordinary people depend on? What exactly is being achieved? But perhaps that's where people are making a mistake. They're assuming the destruction has to make sense according to their own understanding of what constitutes a rational objective. It doesn't... When you're dealing with people consumed by ideological fanaticism, particularly those who have absolutely no respect for the country, its history, its culture or its institutions, destruction itself can become the objective. And this is what concerns me about the increasingly aggressive attempts to impose ideologies completely at odds with the values upon which European civilisation was built. You don't necessarily need to conquer a country militarily to change it beyond recognition. Undermine its institutions, intimidate its population, normalise disorder and gradually make people afraid to defend the very things their society was built upon. Not every rioter has to share that objective. Some are ideological extremists, others are opportunistic criminals, and some are simply enjoying the chaos. But the consequences can be much the same. The mistake is assuming that because their actions make absolutely no sense to you, those actions cannot possibly serve a purpose. Sometimes the destruction isn't an unfortunate consequence of the objective. Sometimes the destruction IS the objective.

Leveraging the power of AI, I created an AI agent to run my wife's money-losing hobby business. Now my wife has 26 hobby businesses and we are losing money 26 times faster👍

Correct. I deeply pity anyone whose soul is so dead that they can watch a car do a barrel flip on cold-gas thrusters and only think "what is this good for"? I do wonder that, myself. But because my soul is not dead, I questioned the utility only *after* reveling in the sheer audacious awesomeness of what I had just seen. Some things you should do just because they're crazy cool.
"Why did they waste so much time making a flying car no one can use in the real world?" Because not everything is about whether you can imagine it being useful to you. Because like art, sometimes we make things for the glory and challenge of making them. Because we don't know if what we'll learn will make your toaster work better and you'll never realize it because you take for granted that things get better without thinking through how that happens. Because you can't inspire people with toasters, but a barrel-rolling car that can drive upside down is absolutely setting someone on fire right now. I'm not a car person and you shouldn't trust me with a rocket, but I want a roadster because I make art and that thing is absolutely a thing made for love and passion and I get that in my heart. (Also because I'd look really cool in one.)🤣

Mary Sue Bloopers! Directing an AI film is a lot like directing actors and working with a cinematographer. People think you type a prompt and out pops a movie. That's not how it works. You provide a prompt and reference images/videos/audio to generate a take. It's not right. You adjust and go again. And again. And again. With traditional filmmaking, you talk to the actors to adjust performance and the cinematographer to adjust lighting/camera, but everything else about the shot basically stays the same. You don't have to worry about telling the potted plant on the table to stay put. With AI filmmaking, it's not just the performance and the camera that change. Everything in the frame can change on the next generation. You get a perfect performance in a room that won't cut with the other shots. Or a gorgeous camera move with a character saying the other character's lines. For every minute of Mary Sue you see, there are about 12 you don't. Here are some of my favorite failed generations.

A firearm isn’t some arcane, complex piece of machinery. It’s a pin and a tube. Everything beyond that just makes it more effective. Until you can stop people from putting pins in tubes, you’ll never eliminate firearms.

🇯🇵 No, BBC. We are not "struggling with our identity" in Japan. It is you who is struggling with your identity. We know who we are. We are Japanese. We are not Muslims. We have temples and shrines. We do not have mosques. We will never forget who we are even if you do.

People are so anxious now because modern secular society destroyed the clear manual of morality previously laid out by religion, and then promptly obliterated almost all historical social norms. Nobody knows what to do or how to act or what to believe in. Instead we just receive empty, selfish, directionless slogans such as “let people enjoy things”, “chase happiness”, “be more empathetic”. None of these mean anything. So every person is left adrift, having to be their own philosopher, and the weight of the world crushes them, because ninety five percent of humanity was never supposed to bear the burden of deep thought. Most humans only feel safe or happy when being told what to do; what to believe in; who they are; what their place in the world is. It is a spectacular cruelty to take the shepherd away from the flock.
