RIP. South Dakota Deputy Sheriff Katherine Frank, who gave her life in the line of duty, is the 74th officer lost in 2026. Deputy Sheriff Katherine Frank succumbed to her wounds resulting from a shooting near the 2900 block of South Keyrell Drive in Sioux Falls, three days prior. On October 9, around 7:30 pm, Deputy Sheriff Frank and two additional deputies arrived at a scene to serve a mental health hold. Approximately 30 minutes later, shots were fired, and both Deputy Frank and the suspect were struck. Emergency aid was administered at the scene, and Deputy Frank was transported to a local hospital, where she remained in critical condition until her passing three days later. The suspect was also treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital. He has been charged with three counts of attempted first‑degree murder of a law enforcement officer- premeditation, and three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Deputy Frank had served with the Minnehaha Sheriff's Office for nearly two and a half years and had previously served for two years with the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Deputy Frank, 26, is survived by her parents, five siblings, grandparents Dan and Deb, boyfriend Austin, and her beloved dogs, Ares and Aspen. In one final act of generosity, Deputy Frank became an organ donor, giving the gift of life to others. 🖤🙏💙🙏🖤
