🧵Zelenskyy hit Putin’s oil five nights in a row, and Putin responded by slashing recruit signing bonuses from $39,000 to $8,000 overnight. As refineries burned 155 miles from the Kremlin, Kazakhstan cut oil transit, and Moscow froze troop pay until January. 1/🧵

Yesterday's double-tap bombardment of a Ukrainian school was a staggering crime, even by Russian standards. Dozens of civilians deliberately murdered as they attempted to collect humanitarian aid

The map at the start is wrong. Alexander the Great reached as far as India, Pytheas possibly reached Iceland, and Hanno sailed as far as Gabon. Gorbachev was obviously quite smart, but even the smartest communists bought into really dumb Marxist ideas. Gorbachev thought that once a country moved from capitalism to socialism, it could never go back. He believed this was a scientific law of history. He also thought that Poland, Hungary, and the rest of Eastern Europe would be so grateful for their communist regimes that they would always be loyal to the Soviet Union. Sarah Paine explains how Gorbachev’s Marxist ideas undermined the USSR:

For those confused as to what’s happening in Poland right now… Imagine if Democrats won Congress, declared the Supreme Court didn't count anymore, ignored its rulings for 3 years, and then, a year before the next election, picked 8 new justices of their own, including a man their leader called his "right-hand man," and when the Republican president refused to swear them in, they swore themselves in and mailed him the paperwork, and when the Chief Justice said that wasn't legal and wouldn't seat them, they waited for a Friday night when the president was on a plane to Africa and had federal security officers who answer to a Democratic cabinet member walk 7 of them into the court through a back gate connected to the Democratic leader's own offices, where one of them announced she had "suspended" the Chief Justice, a move that even a law professor who openly can't stand him said had no legal basis, and then riot police blocked the Chief Justice from entering his own court, the court's website was taken over, the Attorney General moved that same night to strip his immunity so he could be prosecuted, the president had to turn his plane around mid-flight to come home, and the same people who spent years lecturing everyone about respecting the courts went online to say this was the rule of law, that it was painful, and that there was "no other way," which is roughly where Poland is tonight.

🇵🇱 For everyone asking what's happening in Poland tonight, here are the key points: 1. The Constitutional Tribunal's leadership has been challenged. Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska issued orders suspending Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski and Vice-President Bartłomiej Sochański from their duties for one month. She claims authority to take over the Tribunal's leadership as its most senior judge. 2. Why did she do this? Korwin-Piotrowska accuses the existing leadership of obstructing the work of judges elected by the current parliamentary majority, violating judicial procedures and preventing the proper functioning of the Tribunal. She also raised concerns about the court's 2027 budget. 3. The Tribunal rejects the orders. Its existing leadership says the official website was illegally taken over and insists that Święczkowski remains president. The legality of Korwin-Piotrowska's decisions is disputed. 4. Police entered the building. Following the announcement, demonstrators gathered outside the Tribunal. Tensions escalated, with some people reportedly climbing over the fence and throwing objects at police officers. Police intervened and several people were detained. 5. Why is this Tribunal so important? The Constitutional Tribunal determines whether laws and other legal acts comply with Poland's Constitution. Its decisions can affect legislation, government actions and the country's entire legal system. Control over its leadership therefore has major constitutional and political significance. 6. This conflict has been building for months. Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government and President Karol Nawrocki have been locked in a dispute over the Tribunal's composition. Nawrocki refused to swear in three judges elected by parliament, while the Tribunal's existing leadership refused to allow judges appointed by the current parliamentary majority to take their seats. Tusk's government does not recognise the Tribunal's legitimacy and has refused to publish some of its rulings, citing controversial judicial appointments made under the previous PiS government. 7. Political reactions are escalating. PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński called on President Nawrocki to intervene, accusing Tusk's government of turning Poland into a police state. Nawrocki cancelled his trip to Senegal and announced that he is returning to Poland. Tusk, meanwhile, says restoring the rule of law is a difficult but necessary process. The situation is still developing. Both sides dispute the legality of the actions taken, and the legal authority behind the latest orders remains unresolved. Poland is now facing one of its most serious institutional confrontations in recent years. What happens next will depend on whether the two sides can resolve this dispute through legal and constitutional channels or whether the standoff escalates further. For now, Warsaw remains at the centre of a crisis that could have far-reaching consequences for the country's institutions and political future.

🇺🇦🇷🇺 ZELENSKYY WARNS PUTIN: RUSSIA WILL NO LONGER ESCAPE THE CONSEQUENCES OF ITS OWN WAR Ukraine is preparing to intensify strikes against Russian oil refineries in response to Moscow’s renewed air campaign, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warning that Russia can no longer expect to attack Ukrainian territory without suffering consequences at home. “It will no longer be the case that only the country under attack suffers. The nature of war is now such that the aggressor will suffer as well. Technology makes this possible.” Zelenskyy’s warning reflects Ukraine’s growing investment in domestically developed long-range drones and missiles, which allow Kyiv to reach targets far beyond the front lines. Russian oil refineries are particularly important because fuel production supports military logistics while petroleum revenues remain a major source of income for the Russian economy. By expanding attacks on these facilities, Ukraine aims to increase the economic and logistical costs of Moscow’s invasion while responding to Russian strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure. The strategy also marks a change in the balance of vulnerability. Russia’s geographical depth once offered considerable protection to industrial facilities far from the battlefield. Long-range Ukrainian weapons are increasingly challenging that advantage. Zelenskyy’s message to Moscow is straightforward: as Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukraine, Kyiv intends to expand the scale and reach of its response.
